Nelson Distinguished Speaker Series has been made possible through the generosity of the family of Bruce J. Nelson \u201974. Nelson was a brilliant technologist and leader, who developed the Remote Procedure Call and who, at the time of his death, was the chief science officer at Cisco Systems. The speaker series addresses global technical issues and their social, economic and political challenges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we have easy access to technology that produces text with unmatched speed and fluency, we\u2019re questioning the role writing plays in school, work and society. He is also the author of Why They Can\u2019t Write: Killing the Five-Paragraph Essay and Other Necessities, The Writer\u2019s Practice: Building Confidence in Your Nonfiction Writing, Sustainable. Resilient. Free.: The Future of Public Higher Education and the forthcoming book How to Think About Writing in the Age of AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A former college instructor with 20 years of experience across multiple institutions (University of Illinois, Virginia Tech, Clemson, College of Charleston), Warner works as a writer, editor, speaker and consultant, and he is a faculty affiliate at the College of Charleston.
