SUMMARY:Hixon Center Climate Colloquium– "Data Science\, A.I. and Atmosph
 eric Composition"
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the controlling factors behind the chemical compo
 sition of the Earth’s atmosphere is a critical step toward addressing th
 e modern environmental challenges of air pollution and climate change. Tra
 ditional methods interrogating theoretical predictions with observations h
 ave been highly successful in addressing these challenges\, particularly i
 n light of the recent immense growth of data availability in environmental
  systems. However\, there are still gaps in our scientific knowledge due t
 o limitations in modern scientific techniques (e.g.\, theoretical framewor
 ks\, observational systems\, and computational power). Data-driven methods
  from the data science and artificial intelligence literature\, when infor
 med and guided by scientific understanding\, present a valuable tool in ad
 dressing these knowledge gaps.\n\nSam Silva\, assistant professor of Earth
  sciences\, civil and environmental engineering and population and public 
 health sciences at USC\,  will present results from recent work using a v
 ariety of data science and A.I. methods to better constrain modern underst
 anding of atmospheric chemistry and composition.
