Professor Porter studies the chemistry and physics of air quality, using primarily computational tools. A recent paper focused on the more accurate representation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in atmospheric models. This is an important step toward the goal of understanding and predicting changes in atmospheric constituents relevant to climate change and human health. Careful modeling of these compounds was found to increase OH reactivity, leading to higher simulated levels of O3.
