You borrow directly from ED to help cover your educational expenses. These loans offer low-interest rates, and you don\u2019t have to begin paying the loan(s) back until six months after you graduate or leave school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending upon your level of financial need, you may be offered one of two types of direct loans:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mudd2021-wrapper mudd-wrapper auto-accordion\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Federal Direct Subsidized Loan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal government pays the interest on a subsidized loan while the borrower is enrolled at least half-time.&nbsp;After you graduate with an undergraduate degree or at the time of withdrawal, the federal government no longer pays the interest on your Federal Direct Subsidized Loan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is Eligible?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who demonstrate financial need based upon the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interest Rate?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For undergraduate students, the interest rate is fixed at 6.39 percent for the 2025-2026 academic year, with a first disbursement on or after July 1, 2025 and before July 1, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Fees?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1.057 percent origination fee for all loans where the first disbursement is made\u00a0on or after October 1, 2020, and before October 1, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The origination fee is taken from the total amount of your student loan before funds are paid to your student account. Therefore amount of the loan that is applied to your student account is 98.943 percent of the total requested loan amount(100% &#8211; 1.057% = 98.943%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minimum Monthly Repayment?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>$50 (can be more depending on full amount borrowed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the unsubsidized loan, you are responsible for paying the interest on your loan. The federal government does not pay the interest as it does with a subsidized loan. First- and second-year students are eligible for an additional $6,000, and third- and fourth-year students are eligible for an additional $7,000 if the Direct PLUS Loan is denied. These must be completed prior to receiving your first loan disbursement and&nbsp;before funds can be credited to your student account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete the direct loan entrance counseling at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/entrance-counseling\/\">studentaid.gov<\/a>. You will need to&nbsp;log in using your Federal Student Aid (FSA) login.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the direct loan electronic master promissory note (EMPN) at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\">studentaid.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since subsequent loans will be processed using the same EMPN you initially signed online, you will not need to submit another application for future direct loans that you borrow while attending Harvey Mudd College. You will be able to accept or decline subsequent direct loan offers by signing and returning your financial aid package or by emailing us at <a href=\"mailto:&#102;i&#110;&#97;n&#99;i&#97;l&#95;&#97;i&#100;&#64;h&#109;&#99;.e&#100;&#117;\">f&#105;&#110;&#97;&#110;cial_&#97;i&#100;&#64;h&#109;c&#46;edu<\/a> using your Harvey Mudd email address.&nbsp; Students may also accept their federal direct loans via the online &#8220;Financial Aid @ HMC&#8221; portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct Loan Exit Counseling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have previously borrowed through the Federal Direct Loans Program and will be graduating, taking a leave of absence or withdrawing from Harvey Mudd College, federal regulations require you&nbsp;to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/exit-counseling\/\">Exit Counseling<\/a>.
