Meet the Social Media Interns: Malia Morgan

Share story

Hi, my name is Malia! I am a junior computer science major who has been a social media intern since the beginning of my freshman year and a tour guide since the spring semester of my freshman year. I first heard about Mudd from a college counselor who recommended it on the basis of my interest in STEM and desire to attend a smaller liberal arts school.

I didn’t actually manage to visit Mudd until the day before admissions decisions were released, but the chance to spend time on campus and see the community did help influence my final decision to attend.

Ultimately, however, it was Mudd’s Mission Statement that convinced me Mudd was the right college ‘fit’ for me. The Mission Statement pledges to educate scientists and engineers in the humanities “so that they may assume leadership in their fields with a clear understanding of the impact of their work on society,” which was very compelling to me.

Now on campus, I am involved with Harvey Mudd’s Living Learning Community, which seeks to hold educational events on social justice issues to help fulfill the Mudd Mission Statement. While I have enjoyed many different classes, my favorite so far was

“History of Modern Physics” with Professor Hamilton. This course examined physics discoveries through a historian’s perspective, and discussed the impact of race, gender, and colonization on physics. One of the things I found interesting in this course was the way it analyzed not just science’s impact on society, but the influence of societal norms on scientific discovery.

My advice for prospective students during the decision process is to slow down and consider what you really want your college years to be like. Fit isn’t just academic–it also includes location and community!
