{"id":9832,"date":"2022-06-21T11:31:53","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T18:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=9832"},"modified":"2022-06-21T11:31:53","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T18:31:53","slug":"noaa-scholar-to-study-computational-earth-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2022\/06\/21\/noaa-scholar-to-study-computational-earth-science\/","title":{"rendered":"NOAA Scholar to Study Computational Earth Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inspired by his friends and professors at Harvey Mudd College, computer science and mathematics major William Yik \u201924 decided to apply for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/office-education\/hollings-scholarship\">\u00a0Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship<\/a>, which he was recently awarded.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship includes a 10-week paid internship in summer 2023. \u201cI&#8217;ll be able to choose from a list of projects across various NOAA offices in October of this year,\u201d says Yik. \u201cI&#8217;m interested in interning with the\u00a0National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service or the National Weather Service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the internship, Hollings Scholars receive a two-year academic scholarship for their junior and senior years and funding to participate in two national scientific conferences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m most excited to work with a senior NOAA scientist on a project related to computational earth science,\u201d says Yik, adding that his work with computer science professor George Monta\u00f1ez taught him to conduct and communicate computer science research, and a climate change course with Lelia Hawkins, chemistry professor and director of the Hixon Center\u00a0for Climate and the Environment, inspired him to look for computer science-oriented opportunities within earth science fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNOAA has a lot of fascinating work being done to understand each part of the Earth from arctic sea ice to space weather, so I&#8217;m looking forward to applying my computational skills to make contributions to such interesting research,\u201d says Yik.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inspired by his friends and professors at Harvey Mudd College, computer science and mathematics major William Yik \u201924 decided to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":145,"featured_media":9833,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"class_list":["post-9832","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9832","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/145"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9832"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9832\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/9833"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9832"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9832"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
