She earned a degree in computer science\/mathematics with an emphasis in environmental analysis and garnered multiple awards, including a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, a Udall Foundation Honorable Mention, and a Watson Fellowship to investigate the cultural and social ramifications of renewable energy policy and smart electric grids.<\/p>\n<p>Now a PhD student in computer science and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, working at the intersection of machine learning, electric power systems and climate change mitigation, Donti has earned yet another honor. She is on MIT Technology Review\u2019s prestigious annual list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/lists\/innovators-under-35\">Innovators Under 35<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/innovator\/priya-donti\/\">2021 Visionary<\/a>, among those \u201clooking to the future of quantum computing, energy policy, robotics, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every year, the world-renowned media company has recognized a list of exceptionally talented technologists whose work has great potential to transform the world. Tim Maher, managing editor of MIT Technology Review, said: \u201cWe get more than 500 nominations for the list every year, and getting that list down to 35\u2014a task not only for the editors at MIT Technology Review but also for our 30-plus judges\u2014is one of the hardest things we do each year. We love the way the final list always shows what a wide variety of people there are, all around the world, working on creative solutions to some of humanity\u2019s hardest problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donti co-founded an initiative called Climate Change AI, a group of volunteers from academia and industry that seeks to facilitate work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning. She also was a lead author on an influential paper titled \u201cTackling Climate Change with Machine Learning,\u201d which describes how machine learning can be a powerful tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping society adapt to a changing climate. Donti\u2019s focus is on working to mitigate the impact of climate change on the world\u2019s most vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n<p>Donti is the most recent Harvey Mudd alum on MIT\u2019s Technology Review Innovators Under 35 list. In 2016, Kevin Esvelt, director of the Sculpting Evolution group and assistant professor at MIT Media Lab, made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/innovators-under-35\/visionaries-2016\/\">Visionaries list<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.hmc.edu\/spring-2016\/sculpting-evolution\/\">his work<\/a> developing new gene-editing techniques and raising awareness about the potential threats of gene drives.
