{"id":8193,"date":"2020-03-05T13:58:57","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T21:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=8193"},"modified":"2020-03-05T13:58:57","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T21:58:57","slug":"cs-researchers-win-best-paper-at-icaart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2020\/03\/05\/cs-researchers-win-best-paper-at-icaart\/","title":{"rendered":"CS Researchers Win Best Paper at ICAART"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Harvey Mudd College computer science professor George Monta\u00f1ez and his students Julius Lauw \u201920, Dominique Macias \u201919, Akshay Trikha \u201921 and Julia Vendemiatti \u201921 won the Best Paper award at the 12th International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence (ICAART 2020) for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1911.04964\">The Bias-Expressivity Trade-off<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper, one of three that Monta\u00f1ez and students from his lab presented at the conference, proves a set of results showing the trade-off between bias and expressivity (flexibility). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mwEMPT6uIKY&#038;feature=youtu.be\">Monta\u00f1ez posted a video of his ICAART presentation<\/a> of \u201cThe Bias-Expressivity Trade-off\u201d on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2019, Monta\u00f1ez and his students have turned their research of theoretical machine learning, probability, statistics and search into multiple publications and presentations. The article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2020\/01\/14\/cs-researchers-present-findings-in-machine-learning-algorithms\/\">CS Researchers Present Findings on Machine Learning, Algorithms<\/a> has links to all the publications. <\/p>\n<p>ICAART 2020 had just a 16% acceptance rate for full papers.
