{"id":7959,"date":"2019-10-11T10:49:38","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T17:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=7959"},"modified":"2019-10-25T13:37:15","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T20:37:15","slug":"math-for-america-at-hmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2019\/10\/11\/math-for-america-at-hmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Math for America at HMC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2018, mathematics professor Darryl Yong &#8217;96, computer science professors Colleen Lewis and Zachary Dodds and Karen Gallagher (USC) launched their National Science Foundation funded project, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2018\/06\/18\/nsf-funds-math-and-cs-equity\/\">Math for America Los Angeles: Elevating Mathematics and Computer Science Instruction through Teacher Leadership<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A collaborative effort between USC, Harvey Mudd College, school districts in the greater Los Angeles area and Math for America Los Angeles, the project includes funding for 34 master teaching fellows to create an improvement plan for their respective schools\u2019 mathematics and\/or computer science instructional needs.<\/p>\n<p>The fellows participate in summer computer science training, academic team teaching and monthly professional development meetings, one of which was held on campus Oct. 5.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7963\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7963\" class=\"wp-image-7963 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Math4Amer-at-HMC1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Zachary Dodds addresses Math for America participants\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Math4Amer-at-HMC1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Math4Amer-at-HMC1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Math4Amer-at-HMC1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Math4Amer-at-HMC1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/Math4Amer-at-HMC1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zachary Dodds addresses Math for America participants.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cCurrently we have 23 mathematics and computer science teachers who are being supported on this grant,\u201d says Yong. Now in its second year, the project supports two cohorts of teachers with a third cohort expected in 2020. Each cohort stays in the program for five years.<\/p>\n<p>Dodds and Yong opened Saturday\u2019s meeting with an activity for all the participants. \u201cFor me, the highlight is in seeing how much teachers seem to be getting out of the work that they&#8217;re doing with each other and with us,\u201d says Yong.<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, Lewis worked with small groups of teachers in different areas of focus (mathematics, computer science, etc.). She also led the teachers in playing \u201cMicroaggressions: The Game,\u201d a card game she developed to help people\u00a0recognize and respond to microaggressions or bias.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe feedback I got from the teachers about the game was very positive,\u201d Lewis says. \u201cThey reported that it got them\u00a0to talk\u00a0about difficult topics and\u00a0share\u00a0their ideas and experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter how tired I am by the end of the week,\u201d says Yong, \u201cI find that spending my Saturdays with these teachers is energizing and uplifting. I learn a lot of things from these teachers about my own teaching.
