The new building\u2019s three stories and 36,000-square-foot structure should also help alleviate some of the strain placed on the school\u2019s expanding computer science department.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony brought together alumni, board members, faculty and students for speeches by various constituencies on campus.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7937\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7937\" class=\"wp-image-7937 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/liz-at-greg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Liz Orwin at podium\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/liz-at-greg-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/liz-at-greg-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/liz-at-greg.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engineering Chair Liz Orwin &#8217;95 describes the building&#8217;s new makerspace<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The building was planned in collaboration with the HMC community, according to Kim Patten, a partner at Steinberg Hart, the architectural firm that designed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe engaged with the faculty, staff and students to understand what the goals and vision of this facility would be and \u2026 were inspired by the desire of the college to create a facility that would act as a campus and community gateway, embracing and welcoming people to the campus,\u201d Patten said.<\/p>\n<p>The building, located at the southwest corner of Mudd on Platt Boulevard and Dartmouth Avenue, will be unique on HMC\u2019s campus because its primary entrance faces away from HMC\u2019s central quad, unlike most other buildings on campus, Patten said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe addition of the McGregor Center to our campus is an exciting and important step forward for the college,\u201d HMC President Maria Klawe said in her remarks at the groundbreaking. \u201cWe are eager for the buzz of activity that we will experience in our fantastic new makerspace, and we are excited that our growing computer science department will gain a new home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new building will, among other features, include a new makerspace\u2014a studio designed for hands-on creative activities\u2014and machine shop, allowing the school to grow its design and manufacturing curricula, engineering department chair Elizabeth Orwin \u201995 said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7940\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7940\" class=\"wp-image-7940 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/MO-at-greg-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Melissa O'Neill\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/MO-at-greg-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/MO-at-greg-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/MO-at-greg-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/MO-at-greg.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Computer Science Chair Melissa O&#8217;Neill gives a history of the CS department at Mudd.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEssentially anytime where there\u2019s project work for students from any discipline: Clinic thesis, research teams, anywhere students want to come together to work together to create something, the space will have something to offer them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>HMC\u2019s computer science program has exploded in recent years, necessitating the space.<\/p>\n<p>The school didn\u2019t buy its first computer or offer its first computer science classes until 1969, 14 years after its founding, computer science department chair Melissa O\u2019Neill said in a speech at the groundbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>HMC hired its first full-time computer science professor in 1979, and the College graduated its first CS majors in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>Now, dozens of students graduate in CS each year. Last year, the 90 CS-related majors made up 43% of the graduating class, according to the college\u2019s Office of Institutional Research.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four percent of all declared majors enrolled through the end of the spring semester were CS majors, making computer science the second-most popular major behind only engineering (31 percent). Another 21% were CS-math or Math-Comp.-Bio majors.<\/p>\n<p>HMC\u2019s computer science department has also set records in gender equality. McGregor, for whom the building was named, with President Klawe, trustee Laurie Girand and board chair Wayne Drinkward.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nationwide, women earned only 18% of bachelor\u2019s degrees in computer science in 2015, according to the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>HMC is also the only college to have approximately equal gender representation from both students and faculty in computer science, Klawe said.<\/p>\n<p>But the high demand for computer science classes has placed a strain on the department, limiting class registrations and causing frustration among CS majors and other Mudders.<\/p>\n<p>The space created by the new building, though, \u201cwill create room to grow from 16 to 25 faculty positions over time,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1kqY5KSwPX3T02Pz4V9ldlKMTNQLpSBdu\/view\">brochure about the new building (PDF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students are excited about the new space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe college is heading in a direction of further prioritizing inclusivity, community and preparedness for the next generation of students,\u201d ASHMC President Kyle Grace \u201921 said in a speech at the groundbreaking. \u201cAs a computer science major here at Mudd, I am excited to see our incredible computer science program become even larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7942\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7942\" class=\"wp-image-7942 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/beam-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Guests sign a construction beam.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/beam-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/beam-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/10\/beam.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guests at the groundbreaking sign the beam that will be a feature of the makerspace<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Construction will last up to 18 months, with an estimated completion date in early 2021, according to the HMC website. The building is named for Scott A. McGregor, who along with his wife, trustee Laurie J. Girand, was a major donor for the project.<\/p>\n<p>The school set a fundraising goal of $17.2 million for the project, which it reached in approximately three months.
