For the third consecutive year, a team of Harvey Mudd College students has won top honors at the regional Association for Supply Chain Management student case competition. Bohan Gao \u201919, Charles Dawson \u201919, Ryan Haughton \u201919 and Lydia Sylla \u201919 will head to Las Vegas in September to compete in the final round, to be held during the annual ASCM conference.<\/p>\n

The regional competition was sponsored by the ASCM, the professional association for supply chain management (formerly the American Production and Inventory Control Society\/APICS), and Deloitte Consulting, a professional services firm.<\/p>\n

Advised by Kash Gokli, professor of manufacturing practice and Engineering Clinic director, the students joined over 470 teams entering the 2018\u20132019 case competition in October 2018. After advancing through an initial virtual round, the Harvey Mudd team entered the West Coast regional competition last month. Other regional competitions were held simultaneously around the world.<\/p>\n

Gokli assembled the team with students from his E183 course, Management of Technical Enterprise, in which they learned fundamentals of business, engineering economics, investment and finance, all skills that come in handy in supply chain problem solving. All four students are also recipients of the Henry E. and Gayle Riggs Fellowship in Engineering Management. \u201cOur teams winning three years in a row reaffirms that our strong general engineering program teaches our students to be successful problem solvers in any engineering discipline,\u201d says Gokli.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were given from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to solve a case about a toy manufacturer that wants to expand its manufacturing capacity with low investment,\u201d says Gao, who participated in the competition for the fourth time. \u201cCompared with previous competitions, this topic is more heavily manufacturing-focused, so HMC students with E183 and Riggs Fellowship background were more prepared this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the challenges we faced during the regional round was the time pressure of the event,\u201d says Sylla, who was competing for the first time. \u201cWe had to use our limited time as effectively as possible. The first round didn\u2019t have that kind of time pressure, so we had to adapt a little bit for the regional round.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest challenge was to condense everything down into a seven minute presentation,\u201d says Haughton. \u201cWhen you’re talking to engineers, you generally want to give a lot of details and explain how you arrived there. However, it’s very different when you’re talking to the CEO of a company. They want a very strong executive summary and the big picture. You need to capture their attention first and hit the major points before you can go into more detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

The students don’t yet know what the case will be for the September competition, but, given their Harvey Mudd education and experience thus far, they are confident in their abilities to find solutions. As Sylla points out, part of the process is learning that there can be many ways to solve a single problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a little bit surprised by the variety of other students we were competing with,\u201d she says. \u201cThere was one team from an undergrad chapter of ASCM, and there were other teams composed of grad students studying supply chain topics, but there was also a team of accounting majors and our team of engineering students.
