{"id":4711,"date":"2016-04-18T09:33:37","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T16:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=4711"},"modified":"2023-02-01T15:08:53","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T23:08:53","slug":"mudders-impress-putnam-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2016\/04\/18\/mudders-impress-putnam-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Mudders Impress at 2016 Putnam Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Harvey Mudd College is once again the top-scoring undergraduate institution in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical&nbsp;Competition, considered one of the world\u2019s most prestigious university-level mathematics competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty-five Harvey Mudd College students spent the better part of Saturday, Dec. 5, taking the challenging six-hour exam, which requires a unique blend of cleverness&nbsp;and problem-solving skills. In the United States and Canada, 4,275 students competed, and&nbsp;this year the median score was 1 out of a total of 120 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the&nbsp;team competition, Adam Busis \u201919, Abram Sanderson \u201917 and Natchanon Suaysom \u201918 placed an extremely impressive 7th out of 554 institutions\u2014the sole undergraduate-only institution among the top 10 teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the individual category,\u00a0Busis scored 46th and Ben Lowenstein \u201916 tied for 81st and 82nd place\u2014both received Honorable Mentions. Five other Mudders\u2014Jordan Haack \u201919, Bo Li \u201916, Connie Okasaki \u201917,\u00a0Sanderson and Suaysom\u2014placed in the top 200. Seven additional students placed in the top 500: Shyan Akmal \u201919, Christopher Hoyt \u201918, Sam Miller \u201917, Josh Petrack \u201916, Dina Sinclair \u201917, Matthew Wilber \u201917 and Daniel Zhang \u201918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lists of the top 10 teams and the top 100 individual contestants will be published in the <em>American Mathematical Monthly<\/em> along with the problems and their solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud of&nbsp;all 35 students who sacrificed their time, talent&nbsp;and energies to represent us in this year&#8217;s Putnam competition,\u201d says Nicholas Pippenger, professor of mathematics and Putnam Seminar co-coach (along with Professor of Mathematics Francis Su). \u201cThese students who enjoy problem solving represent a cross-section of&nbsp;majors at the College.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth Lowell Putnam founded the event in 1927 in memory of her husband, William Lowell Putnam, a Harvard graduate and advocate of intercollegiate intellectual competition. Administered by the Mathematical Association of America, the six-hour exam, composed of 12 problems worth 10 points each, has been offered annually since 1938 to regularly enrolled undergraduates in the United States and Canada who have not yet received a college degree. Harvey Mudd students first participated in the Putnam competition on Dec. 2, 1961.
