{"id":4434,"date":"2015-12-22T05:49:17","date_gmt":"2015-12-22T13:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=4434"},"modified":"2023-10-24T17:30:26","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T00:30:26","slug":"4434","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2015\/12\/22\/4434\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a Human-Scale Hyperloop Pod"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"single-content\">\n<p>Ten Harvey Mudd College students have joined forces with students from Cornell University, Northeastern University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Princeton University, and University of Michigan\u00a0to try and build a Hyperloop pod that will compete in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacex.com\/hyperloop\">SpaceX\u2019s competition<\/a>. Teresa Despres \u201918, Alex Goldstein \u201918, Hamza Khan \u201918, Chris Kotcherha \u201918, Jessica Lupanow \u201918, Patrick McKeen \u201917, Jeewan Naik \u201917, Adam Shaw \u201918, In Sung Song \u201916 and Hannah Zosman \u201917\u00a0 have been working on the project design this semester, with guidance from engineering professors Chris Clark and Liz Orwin &#8217;95.<\/p>\n<p>Last June, SpaceX announced that it would be hosting a competition to design and build a Hyperloop pod. The competition is targeted toward university students and independent engineering teams with the goal of accelerating progress toward a functional Hyperloop pod prototype.\u00a0The Hyperloop is a high-speed ground transportation system. The idea is basically to create a really long tube that a special pod can travel through at extremely high speeds. This would allow people to travel from city to city very quickly. However, many of the logistics of such a system still need to be worked out.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the competition comes in. Teams all over the country are currently working to design a pod that could travel in such a tube. Next semester, qualifying\u00a0teams will build their human-scale pods and eventually bring them to the mile-long test track outside of SpaceX headquarters for testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it\u2019s a challenging problem,\u201d Adam Shaw said, \u201cHyperloop gives us the opportunity to apply learning from multiple disciplines to a real-world problem with the potential to make a lasting impact on global transport.\u201d\u00a0The Mudders on the Hyperloop team have been working specifically on the controls system and will be traveling to Texas to <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.tamu.edu\/hyperloop\">SpaceX\u2019s Design Weekend<\/a> in January.
