{"id":326,"date":"2013-03-15T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2013-03-15T17:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newwww.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=326"},"modified":"2014-08-21T12:56:23","modified_gmt":"2014-08-21T19:56:23","slug":"artist-activist-to-present-cesar-chavez-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2013\/03\/15\/artist-activist-to-present-cesar-chavez-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Artist Activist to Present C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_327\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/garcia-luis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-327\" class=\"size-full wp-image-327\" alt=\"Luis Genaro Garcia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/03\/garcia-luis.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Luis Genaro Garcia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Artist and educator Luis Genaro Garcia will present a public lecture and art demonstration Thursday, March 28 in celebration of C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez at Harvey Mudd College.<\/p>\n<p>Free and open to the public, the presentation will begin at noon in the Aviation Room of the Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia\u2019s talk, \u201cCelebrating Community in the Classroom and Beyond: The Core Values of C\u00e9sar Ch\u00e1vez in an Educational Setting,\u201d will cover how Ch\u00e1vez\u2019 legacy has influenced arts- and community-based service learning projects that address the community needs of students in a school setting.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with the College\u2019s newly formed Latino student club, Society of Professional Latinos in STEMS (formerly known as SHPE), Garcia will create a painting, which will be displayed at HMC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe subject material will depend on the students&#8217; input and feedback, which will generate a one-of-a-kind art piece specifically related to HMC\u2019s Latino student population,\u201d said Assistant Dean for Institutional Diversity Angelica Ibarra, who will facilitate the project.<\/p>\n<p>As a first generation Mexican-American in Los Angeles, Garcia draws upon the social subject matter of Jose Guadalupe Posada and David Alfaro Siqueiros to reflect a modernized concept of social surrealism. His work has gradually transformed from reflecting injustice through the popular culture of\u00a0Dia de los Muertos to a contemporary \u201csocial realism and surrealism,\u201d referencing institutional injustice of minorities.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia teaches art at Maya Angelou Community High School in his hometown of South Central (South Los Angeles) and is currently pursuing a doctorate at Claremont Graduate University\u2019s\u00a0School of Educational Studies.
