{"id":2853,"date":"2014-07-03T13:00:51","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T20:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about-hmc\/?p=2853"},"modified":"2024-04-01T16:12:32","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T23:12:32","slug":"cardenas-receives-asee-best-paper-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hmc.edu\/about\/2014\/07\/03\/cardenas-receives-asee-best-paper-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardenas Receives ASEE Best Paper Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mary Cardenas, LaFetra Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering, received a Best Paper award from the Division of Experimentation and Laboratory-Oriented Studies at the ASEE Annual Conference, held June 15-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardenas presented the paper &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/289216752_An_implementation_of_electronic_laboratory_notebooks_ELN_Using_a_course_management_system_platform_in_an_undergraduate_experimental_engineering_course\">An Implementation of Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELN) Using a Learning Management System Platform in an Undergraduate Experimental Engineering Course&#8221;<\/a> during a special session devoted to the best papers. Cardenas described the transition from paperbound laboratory notebooks to ELNs\u2014more common in industry, still rare in undergraduate education\u2014used in Harvey Mudd&#8217;s Experimental Engineering course during the 2011\u20132012 academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardenas has been a member of the Harvey Mudd College Department of Engineering since 1995 and has served as associate dean of faculty for academic affairs. She is the co-author of the <em>Journal of Engineering Education<\/em> paper, \u201dUse of &#8216;Studio&#8217; Methods in the Introductory Engineering Design Curriculum\u201d and is co-developer of the sophomore-level rocket-based experimental engineering lab course at Harvey Mudd.
