Harvey Mudd College attracts some of the most promising students in the world, and its incoming Class of 2016 continues that tradition.

The 199 first-years boast stellar academics and unique achievements such as raising award-winning carnivorous plants, setting the entire U.S. history to music, and coaching a middle school science Olympiad team.

“The Class is full of remarkably talented individuals,” said Thyra Briggs, vice president of admission and financial aid. “We were impressed by both their achievement and their clear appreciation of the mission and community of the College. We are excited for the rest of the community to meet them.”

The College received 3,596 applications, representing a 14 percent increase over the previous year’s applications. More than 600 applicants received acceptance letters and, of those, 199 committed to the Class of 2016.

Nearly an even-split between genders—47 percent women, 53 percent men—the Class includes students from 32 states, and nine countries (Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand).

Ninety-six percent of the incoming first-years ranked in the top 10 percent of their graduating high school class (among schools that rank their students); 35 percent served as either valedictorian or salutatorian.
