When do I need to be there?
Orientation formally begins with a lunch (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and welcome program (12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.) on Thursday, August 29, 2013 in the Linde Activities Center. We encourage new students to arrive before lunch. For the full Orientation schedule click here.

Where do I go when I get there?
A registration and welcome table will be set up at the Linde Activities Center. Please come to this location first. Your sponsor (a returning student who will shepherd you through the Orientation experience) will meet you there, take you to your residence hall room and help you get established. The registration table will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 29.

Should my parents come to Orientation?
Your parents are welcome to come to Orientation. There will be a brief informational program for them on Thursday afternoon after lunch (they will receive full information in the mailing to parents from the Office of Development). Your parents should know, however, that there will not be much free time to spend with you after Orientation begins because of the very tight schedule. The best time for parents to visit and get an in-depth campus orientation and have some time to see you would be during Family Weekend.

I’m flying in: which airport is closest to Harvey Mudd?
The closest airport to HMC is Ontario International Airport, located about 10 miles from campus. The cost of an airline ticket to fly to/from Ontario is generally comparable to the cost of an airline ticket to fly to/from Los Angeles International Airport, approximately 50 miles away.

Do you have a shuttle service that can pick me up from the Ontario Airport?
Sponsors will operate a shuttle on Thursday morning that will transport you to campus. Be sure to complete the reservation form, which can be found by clicking here. You should plan on arriving at the Ontario Airport no later than 11 a.m. if you plan to attend the lunch and welcome meeting. Due to the distance, we are unable to operate a shuttle service to Los Angeles International Airport.

Super Shuttle has offered a discount to all Harvey Mudd students, faculty and visitors. You can contact Super Shuttle at (800) 258-3826 or book a ride by clicking here. When you click on the link it will take you to the Super Shuttle discount website.

If you need to cancel a reservation please do it 24 hours in advance by calling 1-800-700-1983.
If you need to know where your Van is, the Dispatch Hotline Number is 1-310-782-3347.

Please know that there is a 15-minute grace period for pick up.

VERY IMPORTANT FOR GROUP RESERVATIONS
When a group of passengers is going together in one shuttle van, you must ALL be present and ready to board when giving your confirmation number to the curb coordinator. When the van comes to the curb to pick up passengers, the driver cannot wait at the curb for anyone. It is Airport Policy that the driver cannot be parked at the curb. If there is a situation where a passenger is accidentally left behind, he will have to pay again for his ride, so it is up to you to make sure that you coordinate the group so that this does not happen to anyone.

I’ll be arriving in Claremont before Orientation. Can I move into my room early, or at least store my stuff there?
We unfortunately are unable to allow you access to your room before 8 a.m. on Thursday, August 29 due to logistical constraints. The days prior to Orientation are fairly chaotic – rooms are being prepared and student staff are involved in training exercises, which makes it difficult for us to meet your needs before the August 29 arrival date. If you do arrive in Claremont early, consider staying in one of the local hotels, and spend your time relaxing or visiting local attractions. A list of local hotels and motels can be found by clicking here.

I’ll be arriving on time: how do I get my stuff from the car to the dorm room?
When you come to campus, park in the lot closest to your dorm (for campus map, click here). After you check in at the Linde Activities Center, your sponsor will take you back to your dorm, where you will pick up the key to your room from your proctor. After that, you can move your stuff from the car to your room.

Will I have time during Orientation to set up a bank account, buy my books or go to Target to get things I forgot?
There is a designated time in the Orientation schedule (Friday, August 30) for new students to purchase their books at the Huntley Bookstore (sponsors will help you with this process). Otherwise, there will be some time for you to take care of personal business during breaks in the Orientation schedule. Sponsors will run a trip to Target, etc. for students needing any last minute supplies. You can also use this day to set up your bank account, buy books, etc. if you were not able to do so earlier.

I’m buying a round-trip ticket, when should I book a return flight?
Finals are the week of December 16 - 20, 2013. Your last final will, at the latest, be on Friday afternoon, December 20. The residence halls close for new students at 8 a.m. on Saturday, December 21. Therefore, the latest we recommend you book your flight home would be Saturday, December 21 departing BEFORE 8 a.m.

Can I ship things to the College rather than fly or drive with them?
We have designated a storage area for parcels in the Platt Campus Center. Due to space and security limitations, we can only receive and hold packages that arrive at the College after AUGUST 1. Please work backwards from this date to calculate when you should send your package (based on distance and shipping method). We recommend that you use UPS as your shipping agent because they have daily deliveries to Platt Campus Center. Starting with your name, use the following address: Harvey Mudd College, 340 E. Foothill Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711. Please make sure your packages arrive after AUGUST 1.

What should I bring? What size sheets do I need? Can I bring my pet iguana?
The Orientation Sponsors have teamed together to publish some “need-to-know” information that will be posted later. The “Lookbook,” a student publication, will be helpful to you in understanding the HMC culture and residential environment. In the meantime, you should check the “Dorm FAQs” list by clicking here.

When will I know the dorm that I’ll be living in and who my roommate is?
On the Deadlines page, you can find the Roommate Matching form. After the June 15 deadline, the matching team will make the placements. Chris Sundberg will generate the assignment letters that give you your dorm, room and phone number, as well as roommate name, home address and home phone number. You should receive this letter by July 15. At that time, we encourage you to contact your new roommate, introduce yourself and try to learn a bit about him/her and start talking about possessions that can be shared or consolidated (i.e. refrigerator) in your room.

What will my mailing address be?
All students at Mudd receive their mail at the address: 340 East Foothill Boulevard, Claremont, CA 91711. There is no need for dorm or room number to be on mail. A full, proper name is a must – we’re stumped by a package addressed to “Snoogle’ums.

Is it true Freshman or 1st year students are not allowed to bring cars ?
Yes, beginning in fall 2010-11, 1st year students can not bring cars to HMC due to limits in parking. For further information, please contact Dean Chris Sundberg at chris_sundberg@hmc.edu or call (909) 621-8757.
