Family Weekend 2010

Harvey Mudd College is hosting the annual Family Weekend February 12 and 13, 2010. The newly revised schedule (see below) features opportunities for parents and family members to sit in on more classes than ever before, take some behind-the-scenes tours, meet with members of the Student Affairs staff and hear directly from President Klawe about the current state of the college. For those who have been to previous Family Weekends or who attended Parent Orientation, this program offers a more in-depth look at HMC while providing more oppportunites to spend time with your Mudder(s).

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2010

Registration / Continental Breakfast - Platt Campus Center
Check-in to pick up informational materials for the weekend, including updated schedules, campus map and name tags.

Back to School
The classes at HMC can't be that hard…can they?  Find out for yourself by sitting in on an open class. Class schedules will be available at registration.  Also, thank you for understanding that, for a variety of reasons, not all classes are able to accommodate parent visitors.

9:30 a.m.
Behind the Scenes at HMC / Gamelans Tour - Meet at the Registration Table / Platt Campus Center
Join Professor of Music, Bill Alves, for a tour and demonstration of the HMC collection of Indonesian Gamelans.  Please Note:  This tour is limited to 10 parents per tour - we will offer up to four tours.

Behind the Scenes at HMC / Printing Press Tour - Meet at the Registration Table / Platt Campus Center
Join Jeff Groves, Professor of Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts and get a behind-the-scene peek at the First-Floor Printing Press, a century and a half old Columbian Iron hand press on loan to The Claremont Colleges.  This will be a hands-on tour with a demonstration and opportunity to operate the press.Please Note:  This one time only tour is limited to 15 parents and involves a two-block walk to Honnold Library.          

Behind the Scenes at HMC / Machine Shop Tour - Meet at the Registration Table / Platt Campus Center
Join Mike Wheeler, Machine Shop Manager, for a tour of the HMC state of the art Machine Shop which consists of  3 Harrison lathes, 3 Tree Vertical Mills, along with an assortment of Drill Presses, arbor press and grinder.

11:00 a.m. - 12:45 "Invention" - How do we think smarter -- about the world, and about ourselves?
2:15 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. "Energy" - Both metaphorically and literally.
5:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. "Laughter" - There really is a funny side... And humor can catalyze understanding.

Overview of Summer Research - Join Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Professor of Computer Science, for an overview of the college's summer research program.  Learn about student-faculty collaborations and find out what makes these partnerships both challenging and rewarding.  Students will share their experiences and success stories.

4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Overview of this year's Clinic Program - Platt Campus Center / Green Room
Director of the Engineering Clinic and Professor of Engineering Management, Patrick Little, will describe this year's Clinic Program, it's projects and impact on students.

5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Wine and Cheese Reception -  Hixon Courtyard
Come mingle with HMC parents, faculty and staff and enjoy a performance from the Claremont College's Ballroom Dance Company.

Proctor Panel or Presentation of New Building - Attend a discussion with Student Proctors as they talk about dorm life, their roles and responsibilities and answer questions (Platt Campus Center / Green Room) or attend a presentation of the New Building soon to be taking shape on campus (Platt Campus Center - Conference Room A & B)

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Alumni Panel - Platt Campus Center / Green Room
Q & A Session with HMC Alumni to discuss life after graduation.

State-of-the-College Address - Galileo Hall
President Maria M. Klawe will address the parents followed by a Q & A session
