HMC
Proctor Evaluations

What is a proctor evaluation?
Each fall semester, the Dean of Students Office sends out a survey to all students living on campus to collect feedback on the performance of the 10 student proctors. The survey also asks general questions about the HMC campus climate. The questions for the evaluation are determined by the Dean of Residential Life (DORL) in cooperation with the Dormitory Affairs Committee (DAC), Dean of Students Office (DOS) and Faculty Assessment Committee.

What is a Survey Monkey?
For eight years, a paper survey was distributed and collected by proctors at a dorm meeting. The responses were then transcribed into a database by the DORL. In 2007, the feedback was collect electronically through a Survey Monkey survey. The response rate jumped to 83%, with no time or labor needed for transcription. We did the same last fall and got an amazing 91% response rate.

So, what did the evaluations show?
Below are PDFs of most results from the evaluation. Comments about individual proctors are not published but are individually shared with the proctor. Similarly, comments about how Facilities and Maintenance could improve were often about individual building attendants and will be shared with them.

Any questions about the proctor evaluation may be directed to Guy Gerbick.

Proctor Evaluation & Results Files

The Fall 2008 proctor evaluation included questions from the DAC about room painting and dorm initiative ideas. The comments for room painting was considered in developing the final version of the room painting & mural policy, and the suggestions for the dorm initiative will be used by the DAC, DOS Office and F&M in discussing possible improvements for the courtyards and physical surroundings of the dorms. The responses to the questions prepared by DAC are below:

  1. Do you want to serve or have you ever served as an officer (president, treasurer, social, etc.) for your dorm?
    28% Yes, 72% No (comments)
  2. The DAC plans to ask the college to approve a proposal to allow students to paint their rooms and common areas. The policy would say, "After room draw, the future resident(s) of a room may request that the color or mural painted in the room by the current resident(s) be repainted to a neutral color." In your opinion, which resident(s) should be responsible for repainting the room?
56% Current resident, 30% Future resident, 14% Other (comments)
  3. The DAC is working with the college on an initiative to improve the outer appearance of the dorms. The DAC has led discussions to brainstorm ideas for what improvements can be made to the courtyards and physical surroundings of the dorms. What suggestions would you make? (comments)

Last fall's survey also included questions about the College's mission, diversity at HMC and experiential learning. Comments for those questions will be used by the Faculty Assessment Committee in its work on the upcoming WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation.
