Minutes for ASHMC Meeting
Sunday, 4:00PM, November 4th, 2012
Riggs Room, Linde Activities Center
ABSENT: None
Status Updates
President – I just got back from Saddle Rock. It’s an annual retreat with faculty, president’s cabinet, board of trustees and a few students go to talk. I’d be happy to share what we talked about. The theme for this meeting was how technology can help us improve our teaching. We’re probably going to run online courses for high school students and alums. We talked about the flipped classroom model, where you use class time to work on problems and watch lecture videos outside of class. We talked about how digital media is going to influence our humanities courses in the future. We talked about how Sakai and blackboard etc fit into our classes. Finally we had a farfetched extreme discussion about Mudd being abolished as a residential college and being entirely online.
VP – We had frosh honor board elections, 3 clear winners and two tied for 4th, so we will need to have a run-off. We might move to a ranking system in the spring where you can rank candidates and then you have an instant run-off. We are going to run Travis’s replacement election soon. We’ll have to replace a few more positions.
Case – Good.
Honor Board – Good.
CAP – No updates.
East – good.
Linde – Good.
South – Good, we had a dorm meeting and we will be asking for LTF money for a TV soon.
Atwood – Good.
Seniors – Good.
Social – Good, we don’t have a pizza guy anymore so that’s why we didn’t have pizza for Trick-or-Drink
North – Good
West – Good, gearing up for Wild Wild West. It’s week 5 since I requested the ice machine. I’m going to start sending more emails.
Frosh – Good
Off Campus – Good
Athletics – Good
Sontag – Good
Sophomores – Good
Juniors – Good
DAC – Good
Treasurer – Haak won the letterhead contest. I talked to business affairs office about switching banks, that would happen before the end of the semester.
Math Club
We’re here to try to turn Math Club into an actual ASHMC club. We have a charter and an actual budget request. Since we came last time we got 1000 from the Math department, we are looking to split our budget between the Math department and ASHMC.
What’s a math tea event?
Every Friday around 3/3:30 there’s an hour or two set aside where we have tea, juice, snacks and we talk about math, the department, Mudd, anything really. We are building a community around math.
--
West – It seems random that they are just getting together and having food which doesn’t have to do with math.
Social – You can always approve their budget and not their charter.

Math Club Budget
We have 5 items, money for baked goods and teas from Trader Joe’s. It’s between 20-30 per week. We have ideas for big events for the year where students can go to events with the math profs. We want to do pancakes with the profs, laser tag, etc. We want to have an integration bee and a few other smaller events, so we have 300 for those smaller events. There’s no fridge for us to use on third floor Sprague where the math teas are. We have had problems with people taking our supplies from the public fridge before, so the new fridge will be in a locked closet. We want 1100 from ASHMC in addition to the money we got from the math department.
Have there been bowling/laser tag events in the past?
No, just pancakes with profs.
Have you thought of using the Leonard fund to go out with the Profs?
We want to take more people and profs out than the Leonard fund allows.
How big is your mailing list?
220~ people, but 30 who appear interested. We also use math-announce-l
Would people go to these events if they weren’t free?
Last year it wasn’t totally subsidized and we still had a good turnout.
How many other smaller activities are you having?
It’s flexible, there are events that come up later in the semester.
How many people come to the math teas?
3ish math profs, 5-10 other people.
Frosh – The fridges and the laser-tag seem like something we shouldn’t be funding.
Treasurer - I don’t think they need the fridge. They also don’t seem to have a well-defined idea for these smaller events.
West – I don’t think we should be approving random refreshments.
Motion to approve 700

Midnight Echo Budget Request
We have a Mudd member. We had 23.09 from last semester, Pomona gave us 150.00, Pitzer gave us 25.00, Scripps gave us 75.00, CMC didn’t give us any member. We now have 198.09. I was just asking for Priya’s share of the money for t-shirts. So we are asking for 28.41. We host Human Symphony in the spring so we might come back in the spring.

5C Dance Company
We’re requesting 100 for each member from their respective schools to cover attire and cost of renting out Garrison. We only received 50 last year since we had one mudd member. We received 1350 last year and we pay just over 1400 for our Garrison theater costs. The showcase is free for anyone who wants to come watch. We dance at halftime for basketball games, football games. We’re asking for 350 from Mudd. We have 3 new freshmen members from Mudd.
Why aren’t you asking for enough money to cover your costs?
We were trying to be reasonable.
Motion to approve 350
