CIS Enlightening – Joseph Vaughan, Calvin Tong, Elizabeth Hodas
Elizabeth – We don’t have any immediate plans to close the Parsons lab
The learning studio has been really popular, so we kept Parsons for overflow
We no longer have control of the space that was the mac lab
At one time, the Parsons lab was supposed to be turned into other work space
Now, the dean of faculty is okay with keeping the PC lab open
Josh – what will happen to the PCs if/when it is closed?
Calvin – we don’t know
We could put the computers in the LAC lab, if that’s what students want
Elizabeth – we thought about opening a mini lab in Platt
We were wondering if you had any feedback about the new learning studio
Kevin – I’m concerned about the reduction in number of PCs on academic end
Elizabeth – we’re looking towards the future of virtual labs, so you can turn your own computer into a lab computer
Kevin – that requires that you have a system with you
Elizabeth – right, but we’re exploring checking out laptops to students
So you could use one of those
Wylie- On that point, the actual lab computers have full sized keyboard and dual screens
A lot of computers don’t have the capability to run large programs
Elizabeth – it would be running off the server
Margaret- about the learning studio, it’s great for individual work but not for group work
Elizabeth – why not?
Margaret- in the lab, computers are closer together
Elizabeth – we’re looking into having large monitors for group use
Lindsay- it’s a concern when you have to type up your own solutions but you’re working in a group
Elizabeth – that’s really good to know
We initially spread the computers apart so students could work around one computer
We will pass on this feedback
We want to keep Parsons open, but it’s a question of what the college wants to do with the space
Ryan – So there’s no plan to close it right now?
Elizabeth – no
But if they need the space for a classroom when TG is torn down, it might happen
It probably won’t happen before the end of Spring semester
We will look into elevator access to the basement
Right now, everyone should have cardswipe to the backdoor of Sprague
We’ve heard that some doors have been propped open after hours, which is concerning
Kevin – sometimes, you have to swipe many times before the door will unlock
Elizabeth- I’m following up with F&M about that
Joseph – is there a critical number of machines absolutely necessary for Parsons?
Scott- clinic work can be in groups of about 5
Joseph – so maybe, 8?
One of the points of the learning lab is that you can move the furniture around
Is that useful to students?
Margaret- I’ve found that it is
Joseph – right now, suggestions like that are valuable in terms of affecting plans for the new building
Margaret – the greatest benefit right now is the variety of types of working areas available
Hufsa – we can go back and ask our constituents for feedback
Elizabeth – we have a feedback form, and if you could encourage students to use it, that would be great
Jackma – before we go, can we talk about printing?
Calvin – we’re thinking about adding cardswipe to the printers
Student would print to one queue and then swipe at any printer to print immediately
We’re hoping that will reduce waste
CUC Honald has the system in place already
Lindsay – if you print multiple jobs, will it print all of them?
Calvin – you will get to select which of your print jobs will print
We’re aiming for it to be in place over the holiday break
Could I ask if there’s any interest in Microsoft office for students?
Ryan – right now, the ACM has that
But CIS is open to everyone
Noisy Minutes Budget – Stephanie Porter
Stephanie – I’m here to propose a budget for noisy minutes
He already spent $1000 on bouncy balls
He wants $300 more for other stuff
Chris – DC did ask CAP for some money, but we haven’t given him anything
Margaret- so the request is for $1300, but they’ve already spent $1000
Roxie – we gave them $7000 before
Margaret – to clarify, this is $1300 for this semester, and they’ll be asking for a similar amount next semester
We really don’t have an extra $2600
Audrey – can we reuse the bouncy balls?
Margaret – ask for donations
Do we usually pay for noisy minutes?
Roxie – yeah, about $1000 per semester
Margaret- they’ve already been allocated $1000/semester for noisy minutes, unless they’ve been using it for Wednesday Nighter
Hufsa- so right now, they’re asking for $300
Josh – how much money do we have left for this semester?
Roxie - $10,700 for the year
Hufsa- motions or discussion?
Margaret – it sounds reasonable
Noah – motion to approve
Seconded
(16,1,0)
Motion passes
Founder’s Day – Mystery human (hufsa)
Hufsa- the class of 2011 is the 50th graduating class, which is a big deal
They’re planning to invite the class of ’61 for the event
A few people will give talks, and it will be super short
It will be the Tuesday of finals week at 530 or 6 pm
Please go to your constituents and get them excited about it, especially seniors
They want it to happen every year from now on, so get a lot of interest this year
Margaret- who’s organizing this?
Hufsa- the office of alumni
Changing From Quorum-based Elections – Margaret “The Bullet” Brier
Margaret- right now, we do quorum based elections
This has been trouble when quorum isn’t reached
I suggest an alternative of having elections open for a period of time instead
We could still have it open for roughly the same period (Monday lunch – Friday dinner)
We would probably have fewer students vote, and I don’t know if that’s too much of a bad thing
Jackma – is there any way we can know how many people have voted?
Margaret- the website counts how many people have voted
The quorums we have right now are high and it requires us to badger people to vote
Hufsa- how long did the last election take to reach quorum?
Margaret- about a week, but it very nearly didn’t reach quorum
We barely got it to close in 5 days
We did a good job of tabling, which we could still do without quorum
Opinions?
Audrey – I like it
Margaret – it would require changing the constitution, which would have to go through the current system
Josh – could we have it on this election?
Margaret – we could, but I don’t want to rush it
Hufsa- I want to see how the online voting goes this time
Margaret- we could also simply lower the quorum
Hufsa- for this election, could you keep track of the numbers per day?
Margaret- we usually get 150-200 in the first 36 hours
After that, it slows down
Kevin – with the new computers in Sprague, you could have it pre-set up so students can vote
Margaret- last election, there was a suggestion for signs in the computer lab
Wylie- in this election, are we going to have comment boxes on the budget items?
Brigid – who’s going to sift through all this?
Margaret – I’m not sure if it’s actually in place yet
I don’t think I can do comment boxes in with an item right now
Brigid- I feel like people who have strong enough opinions can talk to someone in ASHMC
Margaret- in this election, there’s only one item for the whole student body
So I could just ad another item for comments
Hufsa- so let’s just see how this election goes
Margaret- there are two elections in the spring, but both are late in the semester
Jackma – the freshman would like to know how much interest there is for freshman honor board reps
Margaret- there are 8 or 9 people who emailed me with questions
So maybe 6 running
For the juniors, there’s 1 per position
