Hufsa- we’ve reached a lot of our goals this year, and we don’t have any until may
keep that in mind and be thinking about possible goals
Also, we currently have an ashmc calendar, and right now it only has meetings on it
we want more stuff on there; so spread the word
Scott- can you send a link to it out?
Margaret- it was sent to students-l
Everyone is here!
Budget Requests
H20 Overdrive Club
Nicole – made a budget request a few weeks ago
Want more from long term fund for boards
The clubs could use more surf boards, especially for beginners
We’re requesting $800 from two used boards
It’s a good price, and extremely beneficial for the club
Hufsa- what are officer trips?
Nicole- every semester, we do a big trip with all of the officers and mostly beginners
We’ve had two smaller trips so far, and the large one should happen in the next month
Margaret- what sort of boards are going to be purchased?
Nicole – one in a 9fish, new for about $1000, about 9 ½ feet
Margaret- is that a beginner board?
Nicole- yes, that board has a high success rate with beginners
The other board is smaller, but similar, and a little more used, new at $700-800
These boards are larger, and therefore good for beginners
We have more advanced boards, but we need more for beginners
Hufsa- last time, we wondered about the necessity of the surfrider account
Nicole- it gives us access to longer term forecast; 7 to 10 days instead of 3
It makes planning trips a lot easier, since we can know before Thursday whether a trip is viable
Brandon – how accurate are the reports?
Nicole- they’re pretty accurate, as far as knowing what size waves to expect
Margaret- what are the prices for the boards?
Nicole- $450 and $350
Lindsay- what is the $984?
Nicole- that was a mistake.
Roxie – didn’t we give them money for wetsuits?
Linsday – yeah, they were given some
Margaret- so what’s the amount you’re asking for?
Nicole- my intention was to ask for the $800 for the new boards
Margaret- have you had boards break before?
Nicole- yes, if the boards are dropped
We’ve already purchased repair kits
Margaret- so how long has the club owned its current boards?
Nicole- since 06
Margaret- how long do you expect them to last?
Nicole- the good boards will probably last at least 5 more years
As long as we fix problems right away, they should last a while
5C Fencing Club
Margaret- how is this different from the Mudd fencing club?
Eric- we joined in with the 5C fencing club for efficiency
Margaret- do students from all 5Cs come to meetings, and how often are they?
Eric- yes, and once a week
Margaret- when the clubs combine, do they combine equipment
Eric- yes, and we have an agreement that Mudd retains our equipment and funding if dissolution
Margaret- do people bring their own equipment?
Eric- some do, but we have a lot of beginners
We let beginners buy equipment through us, since we get discounts
Margaret- why didn’t PO give you money?
Eric- I don’t know
Margaret- did you talk to CMC?
Eric- they gave us $50/student
Hufsa- what about Scripps?
Eric- no, they didn’t give us any money
Pitzer didn’t either
Hufsa- is there anything you can cut from your budget?
Eric- We need a lot of things to be legal and be competitive
Tournaments also have high entry fees
The equipment we have just barely passes regulations
Wylie- if the equipment is just for beginners who aren’t going to competitions, why does that stuff need to be up to regulations?
Eric- Right now, even our more advanced members don’t have full equipment, since that is very expensive
We also need electric equipment for just practice
Margaret- in his defense, I fenced in high school, and non-electric fencing isn’t real practice
Lindsay –do you have plans to make sure this stuff doesn’t get damaged again?
Eric- I’m not sure, but we’ve bought new storage to keep things from being crushed
Over summer, some group moved and damaged our equipment
Lindsay – you don’t know who did it?
Eric- we stored stuff in the LAC, but we don’t know what exactly happened
In general, this stuff just does break and we have to deal with repairs
5C event by Asian American Resource Center – Teresa Wen and Mystery Mudder
Teresa–We want to bring a youtube group to the event
We don’t have Mudders involved in planning the event, but they’re interested
We think this will help Mudd students to see the professionals of youtube
The event is coming up in early November (the 10th)
A lot of student from apispam are planning to attend
Brandon – is it a musical group?
Teresa – they do different things; jokes, music videos, collaborative things, etc.
Discussion
Yearbook (response from constituents)
Ryan – I got a very positive response towards a down payment towards a yearbook
Atwood- ditto
Josh- That’s effectively raising the student dues by $5
Ryan – It’s effectively a zero sum thing
Wylie- 60% of people were willing to pay the extra
8% of people said it wasn’t something they would do
Everyone else didn’t want one at all
Julia- how are we going to collect?
Margaret- you could table at the Hoch with a student roster
It would be good for some of us to help table
Lindsay – some people might like having an online yearbook
Julia- 30 years from now, there’s no guarantee it will be findable
Ryan – is there a digital copy somewhere?
Julia- yes, there is a PDF for most of it
Brandon –in addition to print copies, we should have an archive on the mudd website
Margaret- do we all agree that the $5 charge is reasonable
Roxie – could we make a waiver to give out?
Julia- there are problems with handing them out; how do we make sure people who pay get them?
Wylie- in the mailboxes
Margaret- do you have any idea about the future yearbook committee?
Julia- we have a rough idea, but nothing definite
Margaret- how does the mailing happen?
Julia- we mail them in the Spring
International students don’t get any
Lindsay –if we did have people pay $5/book, how much would that reduce costs by?
Julia- I would have to double check
Margaret- that would gather about $1600
Audrey – if you did it through student accounts, would the money get to you fast enough?
Hufsa- they can disperse it at any time
Margaret- it is kind of sad that we don’t have enough money, but we will know how many to order exactly
Assuming you get $1500 from ads and $1500 from students, could you take $2000-3000 less?
Julia- yes
Ryan – so we’re looking to allocate yearbook $16-18k?
Hufsa- yes
Discussion
Roxie – we have $24,750 for the year right now, without giving any to yearbook
Scott- do we have a number for what was spent last year between now and the end of the year?
Roxie – more than we have now
Hufsa- we gave out a lot more than we should have earlier
We need to cut yearbook for ashmc to have money for new clubs
Things like rube Goldberg might happen again
Any numbers?
Scott- $18,000 to yearbook
Margaret- $16,000
Roxie – can we discuss paying the yearbook editor?
She hasn’t been paid in a couple of years
Brandon – how much was she asking for?
Roxie- $16-18k
Hufsa- if they gate $1500 from ads, $1600 from students, and $3000 from their savings
That reduction from their original $22000 leaves $16000
Ryan – we shouldn’t take all of their savings in one year, so maybe $17,000
Margaret- if they need to cut it down this year is the year to do it
Cap- motion to give yearbook $16,500
Ryan – let’s talk about all of it first
Hufsa- are there any other numbers?
Should we go on?
Ryan – it might be useful to get yearbook out of the way first
Josh – seconded for $16500
(16,1,1)
Motion passes
Margaret- can we tell AARC to go to OID or APISPAM?
Hufsa- what about H2O?
Wylie- they shouldn’t get any money
Does anyone think we should increase their budget?
Roxie – I do; they need to be able to keep going after seniors graduate
Margaret- I’m not convinced this is a cost that they need
Sophomores- they’re asking for a disproportionate amount of money to the # of students
Hufsa- but the people are really committed
Lindsay – it also seems that they want more beginners and involvement
Brigid- how much do we have in the long term fund?
Roxie - $5600 that we can spend
Hufsa – I think it would be a good investment
The club members are really dedicated, and it would be put to good use
Wylie- we’ve cut a lot of people’s budgets, and we should keep that in mind
If we give them everything, that’s not fair
Margaret- I’d be comfortable with giving them less than $400
Garrett – can we give them money for one board?
Ryan – can we retroactively change the stipulations on what we already gave them?
Roxie – yes
Margaret- last time, we gave them $540 for wetsuits, and now they only want $380
Can we take the difference and give them enough for the cheaper board?
Hufsa- Give them $200
Now for fencing
Garrett, do you know what went on with the moving of equipment?
Garrett- I have no idea
Ryan – HMC students make up 1/3 of the club
Right now, they need ~$2000
Can we pay a third of that?
Ben – are we going to keep having to giving them money for repairs?
Roxie- they mentioned that it’s a PE class that would help with expenses
Wylie- they’re planning to raise the fee for that
Margaret- I don’t think we should pay for the nationals charges
Eric didn’t seem to understand the setup
Russell – can we give them $350, to total $550 ($50/student from Mudd)
Eric- I propose $350
Lindsay – or $300
Roxie – I feel like I want to wait for the regular leader to come in and explain the fees
Margaret- we don’t have enough information about the numbers
Ryan –motion to table
Ben – seconded
