Budget Requests
Simone Lamelle, Pan-African Festival
This weekend, we’re hosting the 11th annual Pan-African festival
The festival brings out local vendors of the African Diaspora and performers
We want to ask if ASHMC could help with financing
We have gone to Pomona’s gov’t, and are planning to go to Pitzer later today, and CMC some other time
Our proposed budget is $2800
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Margaret- how much are you requesting from ASHMC?
Pomona’s student government gave $800, the Chaplain’s office is contributing $150
We don’t have a specific number
Hufsa- have you asked for money from OID?
No
Ayyappa- how much would you like from us?
We have $950 now, so we need a lot more
Matt – you should really go to the diversity office at Mudd
Are there any other groups here at Mudd we could go to?
Leya – you can go to social, we meet on Wednesdays
Hayden – have you gone to OBSA to ask for money?
We have, but we like to not completely rely on them
Hufsa- did you come to ASHMC last year?
No, we’re trying to make this a bigger event this year
Margaret- if you had to cut something because of a lack of funding, what would it be?

Sean Yen, Japan Benefit Showcase (CAPAS)
Sean – the event is next Thursday on Pitzer
    We need about 700 for sounds, stage and lighting
    3500 for performers
    Then some various other expenses for food, fencing, security, etc.
    The total is a little over $5000, so far we’ve raised $2100
    We’re asking for $1000 from ASHMC, just like what we’ve asked for from the other 4Cs
    In the past, we’ve raised $2000-2500
Chris – so your event costs more than you raise?
Sean – yes

Rachid and Audrey, Club Festival
Rachid  - last semester, Audrey had the idea for a club festival
    Hufsa made us actually do it
Audrey- each club is going to set up a booth and do something related
Rachid- every ASHMC club is going to have a booth
    We’ll have bands and food, and it’ll be a lot of fun
Audrey – it’s this next Saturday
Brigid- why are we doing this at the end of the year?
Audrey – it’s just for fun, and we didn’t have the idea earlier in the year
Brigid- how is this different than the other club event?
Rachid- this is more interactive
Hayden – why aren’t the bands playing for free?
Audrey – we have to incentivize
Rachid- we could haggle
Chris- what’s the punishment for a club skipping?
Rachid- tar and feather
Margaret – I think the 4 hour length is a little long
Rachid- I definitely anticipate every student attending the event
    We could shorten it
Chris- why not save this event for next year?
Rachid – no
    It’s not a recruiting thing, it’s just fun

Steve Matsumoto, Mood Swing
Steve – we’re recording our first CD as a group
    Last year, ASHMC gave us $600 of the $1700 we requested
    We’ve been saving, but we need more to record
    We’re making a request to every school we have members from
    We’re asking $500 to $1000, since we’re not sure how much each school can give
    Our first recording session is tonight, and we’re just hoping to get the money
Dean Guy- is this considered an investment by the ASHMC council?
Steve- yes, we’re hoping to use the CD sales to fund us in the future
    So we’ll ask for less, if anything, from ASHMC
Josiah – how many CDs are you planning on making?
Steve – we can make our own CDs once we have the recordings
Noah- will you be selling on, like, iTunes
Steve – we’ve just started talking about that, but we haven’t quite figured it out
    If the profit is an issue, we can talk about giving the investment back to ASHMC
Stephen – is there any way to reduce the number of needed sessions?
Steve – this is a maximum, but we might be able to cut it down

4:25 PM – Discussion
Chris- we have about $4000 left for the semester
Margaret- there is only one meeting left for this semester
    Any budget requests will be either today or on May 1
    Except emergencies
    How much did the Pan-African festival ask for?
Will – they didn’t ask for a specific amount
Chris- how many mudders do you think are going to attend?
    I would guess, not very many
Margaret- are there any other Mudd events on the same day?
Matt- how about $300?
Steve – I think OID will give them some money, so it seems reasonable
Stephen – I think we have low membership in this organization, so that’s a lot from us
Matt- but we have a lot of money left
Brigid- we should put something back into the long term fund
Margaret – in the past, we’ve tried to not give money to LTF
    Since dues given by students should go to those students
    We try to leave <$500 to LTF
Chris- we spent a lot from the LTF this year
Jack – I wouldn’t think it would be a bad thing to give back a lot
Margaret- we are going to suggest that they visit OID
    Can’t social help them?
Leya- I don’t see why not
    I can’t promise how much, but they can definitely present
Chris- we should talk about other budget requests before voting
Margaret-  Next, let’s talk about Japan
Chris - I don’t understand why they’re going to spend more than they raise
Brigid- we have to think about it as raising awareness along with money
    It’s not just about raising money
Matt- as a note, Christine Lee is planning a Mudd event for Japan awareness
Margaret – I think he said they’ve put this event on in the past
Josiah – they also spent a lot more the last time they did this
Matt- I don’t think we should fund this
Margaret – usually, we try to give at least a little but, we don’t have to
    We can tell them to try OID
Russell – it’s not a benefit, it’s a concert
Scott- can we give them money, with the stipulation that they have to give it to charity?
Jack – we’re supposed to fund student events, not charity
Noah – if they were approaching us as a concert, how much would we give them?
Margaret – do we want to give them any money?
Russell – I feel like this is really last minute; it’s happening on Thursday
Margaret – let’s talk about the club festival
Hufsa- Ideally, this event would have been earlier in the semester
    But we want clubs to get a chance to show off what they’ve done
Jackma- I think 4 hours is long, I propose they cut it down to 2 hours and thus the band will cost less
Jack – If the event is longer, more people can go
Ellie- we could also recommend that this be the club fair in the fall
Matt- West is really in support of this
Margaret- my concern is just about the time it’s happening
    Because it’s so late in the semester, a lot of people will want to attend but will have other stuff
Russell – Does anyone have an idea about how many clubs are going to participate?
Margaret- they sent out emails to club-presidents-l
    I think a lot of clubs thought it wasn’t going to happen
Dylan – I think this would be a really good way to get clubs publicity
    A lot of students don’t know about a lot of clubs
Hufsa- I don’t think the band should be paid that much
Jack – how much do we pay bands for Wednesday nighter?

Margaret- we could give them everything, cut it down for a specific reason, or just a general cut

Discussion of Appointed Positions
Margaret- we want to appoint a webmaster, which is a new position
    I’ll send out an email for appointed positions
    We want to make routine changes to the constitution and bylaws
    Just correcting small things, like incorrect statements
    This year, we’re going to try to get all of the appointed position applications in by mudd budgeting
Dean Guy – we also want to add MUDDtv administrator as an appointed position
Scott- do we also want to have a club coordinator position
Margaret- what do you guys think?
Jack –I think that would be a good position; they could organize future club fairs
    Also, people have come to DAC wanting to get to all the clubs, so that would make it easy
Margaret- you can do that through club-presidents-l
    Also, after Mudd budgeting, we need to have another election to approve budgets over $1500
    We would also include honor board positions
Hufsa- you need to decide whether or not the seniors can vote
Margaret – in the past, we have always had seniors vote
    Unless someone were to be strongly opposed, we’ll continue that
