HMC
Kiley – Margaret and I met with presidents from other colleges
Their voting systems and check out systems are different
Margaret- in general, they’re very different
Kiley-margaret and I are starting to work on our projects
East- good
Talked to treasurer, but we’re still waiting on allocations
Juniors- good
Trying to plan class event
Looking for cheap lab coats
Case- good
We used extra allocation to buy speaker for our courtyard
West- good
Used allocation for kiddie pool
Sontag –good
Used money for food and ps2 and ddr pads
South – good
Using extra money for toaster and food
Cap – good
Currently used less than half of our budget (trying to be conservative)
Linde- good
Used extra money to clean up pool room
Social – good
Not sure about budget, but will keep you posted
North –good
Bought speakers and a bbq
Atwood- good
Looking to buy a projector
Freshmen – good
Chemistry and &e4
Looking to figure out how to spend class money
Dac –room draw mode!
Athletics- good
Sophomores – great
Gonna go bowling as a class
Treasurer- should be getting money for dorms this week
Margaret- there are 4 school weeks before spring break
We’re supposed to have election for next year’s ashmc before then
We were supposed to have had an election to elect our treasurer, but that hasn’t happened yet
Each election would take at least a week
Report/Discussion: Renovation of the Inner Dorms
Hufsa- do you wanna talk about what you’ve heard
Will – some liked the idea of a sontag system
Some didn’t like the idea of a south system
Some just wanted a kitchen
Scott- some wanted the dorms more isolated to alleviate strangers coming into the buildings
Eric – west is unanimously against it
We want a kitchen, though
North- no one liked the idea
Ryan – some have thought about isolating the entire dorm behind swipe access
Case is the only dorm with swipe access to all L’s
Case sorts out swipes by the L, but it could be more difficult with a whole dorm
Ayyappa – it’s going to be a pain to get everyone to approve it
Lindsay – I think it’s really nice to have both options in terms of style of dorm life
Will – students generally had the impression that the school is going to do whatever it wants
We don’t really feel like we had a say
Hufsa- Maria said to keep in mind that this is a long term project
We do have to consider how students at the time will feel
I told Maria that our opinions as current students and future alums are also important
Writing Center Happy Hour -- Elly Schofield
Elly – every year, the writing center does a happy hour event
It’s our opportunity to hear feedback from students
We usually get between 100 and 200 students in attendance
This is the same budget from the past few years
Any questions?
Kylie- can you buy pre-chocolate-covered strawberries?
Elly- that would be more expensive
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes -- Tim Williamson
Tim’s rep -Walk a mile is an event to raise awareness about violence toward women
We’d also like to use it as a way to bring together the 7 schools on one event
We also want to bring together the colleges with the community
Our budget it $11,500
We want to start the event at Pitzer, and go through all of the colleges
The buy-in is $20, that includes lunch
We will have project sister come to speak before the event
Scott- how many people are you planning to have attend?
Tim’s rep – 70 volunteers, 200 walkers, and many spectators
We’re asking for $2,000 from each school
The cost this year is going to be much more expensive this year than following years
If we end up raising more money than we need, the rest will be donated to project sister
We’re just trying to get the event off the ground
Kiley- what are you going to do if you don’t get enough money?
Tim’s rep – if we don’t get enough, we won’t be able to sponsor everyone’s shoes
We also might end up cutting t-shirts
Proposal Discussion
Hufsa- we can start with the writing center
Kiley- how much have they asked for in the past?
Hufsa- the same amount
Motion to approve $500
Seconded

Motion passes
Hufsa- now, let’s talk about the shoes
Audrey – I don’t think they’re going to make $11,000
Eric- so each participant pays $20, then gets shoes, shirt, and lunch
I think it’s a good idea, but I don’t think they’ve got a clear idea of what they’re doing
We can’t really not give them money and not support the cause
Jackma- can we defer the decision until next week?
Hufsa- no…
Ayyappa- can we make it as a function of Mudders who participate
Lindsay – we should pledge a certain amount per Mudder who participates
Marget- they should sell the food to cover the cost
Lindsay- I was talking to Pitzer social chair about this last week, and I could ask more this week
Stephen- can we not give them money, and ask them to come back with a better budget
Kylie- I think we need to make it apparent that we want to help
Ryan- can we send them an email saying what changes we want to be made
Hufsa- suggestions would be to charge spectators
Collect the shoes back
Jackma – is this a charity organization?
Kiley – yes
Ryan –motion to not give money, send an email telling them why, and give them money later
Seconded

Proposal: Removing the quorum requirement -- Margaret Brier
Margaret – As a side note, Pitzer is trying to revert back to a student government
As you guys know, the current system requires ballots to reach quorum
Last semester, people either didn’t care or were tired
None of the other schools do a quorum system
They keep ballots open between 1 and 3 days
We should get rid of quorum because it requires us to pressure students to vote
That’s not the best image for ashmc, or the best way to hold an election
If we still had an election open for 5 days, we could not do advertising
Last spring, we had an election that didn’t reach quorum, and it altered our budget
The change would mean our elections are always the same length
We would be able to remove the confusing part from our constitution
We would still try to get students to vote, but it wouldn’t be so much pressure
It would simplify things and not make more work for us
Ryan – the good part of the quorum system is that we don’t have 10-15% of the student body speaking for everyone
Lindsay – how many people gave a “no vote” in the last election?
Margaret- 1/10 to 1/3 of students
Dean Guy- Would this require a constitutional change that would have to go the student body?
Margaret- yes
Jackma – you said the other schools only give 1 or 3 days to students? Would that create more pressure?
Margaret- I said five days because that’s how long our elections usually last
Dean Guy- it’s possible for people to vote with smart phones?
Margaret- you can
Ryan – it seems like the advantage to removing quorum is that it would be easier and there wouldn’t be an impediment to elections going through, and that’s not a good thing
Margaret – the reason the election last spring didn’t go through because seniors didn’t care or didn’t know to vote
Lindsay- I think people should have the right to not care
Margaret – I agree
And the fact that this system is more commonly used speaks well for it
Hayden – can we combine this system with the quorum system?
Margaret – we can say 8 days or when we reach quorum
Scott- what’s the current system for if we don’t reach quorum?
Margaret – there is none; last spring, the semester just ended
Today, I want to vote to put it to student body vote
Lindsay- I motion to put a vote to remove the quorum requirement on the next election
Audrey - seconded
