Eric Anderson - WrestleSHMC charter approval
Eric- I did wrestling in high school. Talked to people who are interested. Make place for previous wrestlers to meet and attract new people to the sport. Want to meet twice a week.
Dean Chris- are the pads they use in jujitsu sufficient?
Eric- We may work with jujitsu to ask for new ones. They are sufficient for now
Dean Chris- Jujitsu says they’re insufficient. Will talk to Donald about that
Elly- is there a concrete number of people?
Eric- not yet. Sent email to students-l. At least 8.
Elly- have you proposed this to athletics?
Eric- Not yet
Nick- do you plan on asking for equipment from ASHMC later?
Eric- yes
Kevin Kim - Budget request for ToolsHMC's Spring Awesome Stuff Competition
Kevin- requesting money for the third annual awesome things competition. Compensate each team 75 dollars. Requesting 950 dollars. Scheduled for Sunday, March 28th. Tentative.
Maureen- how many teams in the Fall?
Kevin- 7. Hoping to have around 10
Maureen- Chris, do you know how much we’ve given toolshmc so far?
Chris- 750, 950, 950
Maureen- this would have to go to a student vote. The vote would be to put it on a ballot. Not sure that there is going to be an election before then. Do you think you could use the funds you have now?
Kevin- I’m not sure what our funds are. But I guess. When are the next elections?
Maureen- not sure. Maybe we could do an online partial election. But still not sure
Chris- how many dorms participate?
Kevin- up to dorms
Chris- last semester?
Kevin- 2
Shawn- how many repeat people are there?
Kevin- not sure, last time was my first time
Moby Khan - Budget request for Muslim Student Association West Conference Maureen- came to us last semester. Told them to come back after the conference. Now coming
Moby -we didn’t make it to the conference. There was an accident. Asking for money for gas, food: $225
Chris Abella - Big Brother Big Sister Club charter approval
Chri -Mentor program. Just like big brother/big sister, but not actually Big Brother Big Sister. Have been talking to the program (Uncommon Good). They don’t have a good relationship with Mudd, but do with the other 4 C’s. Not suggesting we be tutors, we already have tutors. More that you are an “older brother”- 2 hours per week. You have to sign up for a year, goal is to build up a relationship.
Nick- what is the purpose of doing it through ASHMC as opposed to just having students volunteer?
Chris- costs for fingerprinting, training. They will reimburse, but I think we should not put the costs onto the program if we can afford to pay it
Donald- does Uncommon Good pay for activities?
Chris- people sponsor the activities, but they don’t themselves. Having a budget would help us do activities.
Donald- how much do you see you needing?
Chris- $10 initially. $10/month per person. Save budget for events. The point isn’t to spend money on the kids
Alyssa- is the yearlong commitment a school year?
Chris- ordinarily it is, but they recognize that we’re college students. They expect you to stay in contact
Dean Chris- weekly time commitment?
Chris- 2-hour weekly minimum
Caitlin Olmstead - Chem Club budget proposal
-proposing budget for Chemistry Club. Want $400 for a few events, get students active and find students who want to take over the club. Study break events for snacks. At that point we could do bigger events. We used to do Smashy Smash for Valentine’s Day. Have done liquid ice cream, dip n dots, coffee can ice cream. Expect 20 people to show up (chem majors), and of course everyone else is invited.
Maureen- know how many people in club?
Caitlin- no, but have held personal things for chem majors and 20 people came
Bryan- what kind of event would you do? Liquid nitrogen?
Caitlin- can’t guarantee what it will be, might not spend it all. Asking for so much just to have enough to do som activities
Elly- how are you planning on promoting study breaks?
Caitlin- list, putting things in mailboxes, students-l.
Denis- is there a chem. majors mailing list?
Caitlin- yes. I could do that too.
Nick Hasegawa - Constitutional Convention budget proposal
Nick- We have been talking about doing a constitutional convention where group of ASHMC members would go on retreat to plan out redraft of constitutional. Planned it for this upcoming weekend.
-Round trip –106 dollars for gas
-DOS covering half. Asking for 700-750 dollars from ASHMC long term fund
Denis- what are the issues you are planning on addressing there?
Nick- updating because it’s out of date: Committee chairs. CAP regulation. Clubs- needs to be more specific regulations (money, what can be a club, based on activities). Brainstorming session. Lay groundwork
Margaret- what is state of changes when you get back?
Nick- hope to have tasks to give to people, they will draft it, put it together, put to student vote
Donald- is this a package deal? Do you want us to approve it all at once or are you prepared to write different drafts?
Nick- going to present parts as we produce them
Dean Chris- are there going to be any changes to social? More power? It’s been pretty basic for a number of years.
Caro- are you talking about security concerns?
Dean Chris- you have done a good job. In years past, people who just walk away. There has to be some sort of structure
Nick- goes along with better defining role of committee chairs. Want to make it more specific so people can come in
Kiley- Do you have binders for each position to pass down to keep track of what each position is doing? This could help the successors
Nick- not now
Donald- driving?
Nick- want to rent Mudd van but not available? Concerned because there is light snow, need chains on tires. Might reschedule to next weekend. There is an F&M van and wouldn’t be available until 7pm Friday.
Emma- are we concerned about the membership? There is only 1 junior out of the 10 people. If we don’t finish, it may be hard for her to take this on and explain it to people
Maureen- junior class president and social chair are the only juniors anyway. Have to deal with after
Donald- have you thought about asking people outside the ASHMC bubble to go?
Maureen- the whole weekend would get a lot more complicated
Donald- that’s true but if you had two people that were not seniors or juniors, you would get an entirely new perspective
Maureen- any interested in going?
Margaret- I’ll go
Elly- could we have meeting with class presidents
Nick- this is a beginning of a process. Won’t be done with draft. Can extend this process once we come back.
Hufsa- how were the 10 people who are going decided?
Alyssa- volunteered during ASHMC meetings.
Donald- what other activities do you have planned?
Nick- we have a game room, cards.
Discussion and action
Nick Hasegawa - Constitutional Convention budget proposal
Elly- makes sense to take out of long-term fund. Seems reasonable.
Margaret- do you want more underclassmen? Kiley raised her hand too
Nick- the lodge size is doable
Alyssa- could just stay one night
Nick- comfortable with 26th?
Hufsa- maybe we could talk more about it next weekend before going. Then I could go too.
Maureen- ask everyone to email us about the section that addressing section
Alyssa- could we make list to communicate back what we’re doing
Shawn- will you have internet service there?
Nick- wifi yes
Donald- are we talking about the funding or if the convention is a good idea? We should approach the funding first
Maureen- at this point we were hearing people’s ideas on the convention
Denis- is it more of a brainstorming session? Then it should be more open. Get a general list of topics. Seems like there is a concern about getting
Maureen- in the Fall, a lot of people said that we should look at it in a small group and come back for the idea. Let’s talk about the budget though. We can talk about what we’ll talk about later. Does anyone think it’s too much money?
Chrissy motions to approve $750 from long term fund
Hufsa seconds
Motion passes
(9,0,7)
Maureen- Going to create the mailing list. If you have any other bigger issues that you don’t want to put on the mailing list, email me or Nick or Emma.
Erin- email students-l to get more sophomore and frosh input
Maureen- okay
Moby Khan - Budget request for Muslim Student Association West Conference Erin- how many Mudd people?
Sabreen- there are 10 in the club. 2 mudd students. 2/3 people who went were from Mudd.
Donald- got in car accident?
Sabreen- someone blacked out and had to go to the hospital. My dad used his points to book a hotel. It was free for us. Decided to not go the conference the next day.
Erin- I like the idea of the conference, but we have to be careful for the per student dues. I think it’s something we should think about.
Shawn- that’s the limit per person?
Maureen- that’s how much we’re allocated but we’ve spent more in the past
Alyssa- can address this in the future
Julian- promotes diversity
Donald motions to approve budget of $225 for MSA West Conference
Hufsa seconds
Motion passes
(16,0,2)
Caitlin Olmstead - Chem Club budget proposal
Maureen- more active in the past. Miss it.
Donald- and smashy smashy is awesome.
Dean Chris- used to break frozen pumpkins
Donald motions to approve chem club budget of $375
Elly seconds
Motion passes
(18,0,0)
Kevin Kim - Budget request for ToolsHMC's Spring Awesome Stuff Competition
Maureen- last gave them $750.
Bryan- if they don’t associate themselves with Toolshmc, can we give them the full amount?
Maureen- technically they could.
Shawn- but they did get the money this way before.
Donald- I think we should recommend they come back as an event. Then could we vote on that now?
Maureen- could just ignore it this week and do it next week
Alyssa motions to defer decision for a week
Emma- does this start a bad trend? Will clubs do this?
Elly- it makes sense for it to be separate.
Julian- the club is one person who buys tools and lends them to other people.
Nick- it doesn’t necessarily have to be associated with toolshmc just because they use tools.
Donald- can we do this?
Bryan- can discuss this as the retreat
Julian- this thing is a lot like the Rube Goldberg thing and that isn’t through toolshmc
Elly motion to defer decision for a week regarding the budget request for Toolshmc Competition, suggesting Toolshmc come back with the budget request as a separate event (not associated with the club)
Alyssa seconds
Motion passes
(14,3,1)
Eric Anderson - WrestleSHMC charter approval
Maureen- any issues with charter?
Denis- I wasn’t here with jujitsi club started, but did we talk about safety or if people got hurt?
Maureen- no
Denis- we have one person with 5 years of experience, but there should be a safety thing
Donald- emergency kit
Hufsa- require wavers?
Shawn- hockey club has that. Ties into liability of cap trips. Could discuss that at retreat
Maureen- DOS is dealing with that. ASHMC is covered by insurance and president is not, so president could still be sued. Trying to figure that out.
Margaret- could we add that to the jujitsu too?
Maureen- could recommend it?
Shawn- are you going to make a waver for every club?
Margaret- seems a little different for wrestling
Donald- soccer?
Alyssa- maybe anything that goes through athletics needs waver
Julian- but intramural sports doesn’t have that
Chrissy motion to pass WrestleSHMC charter
Julian seconds
Motion passes
(16, 0, 2)
Chris Abella – MentorSHMC charter approval
Donald- this is awesome
Nick- I really like it, but should it be part of MMAD?
Donald- I think having a specific club makes sense
Alyssa- I did this is in high school. It’s nice to have a club at the school where everyone is involved.
Margaret- and science bus isn’t part of that
Hufsa motions to approve MentorSHMC charter
Margaret seconds

Minutes from 2/14/10
