Dean Noda

Status Updates

Case, East, Sontag: Good.

Linde: Planning Thanksgiving celebration Tuesday night.

Atwood: Dorm meeting last Tuesday to talk about game room, going to get satellite TV, & F&M will get us carpet.

North: Meeting the week of Broomball.

West: Wild Wild West went well. Big party, but no problems, although one noise complaint.

SFC: Haven’t met in a couple of weeks.

Social: Use new monitors at WWW, but no new subs yet. Already ordered, just didn’t arrive yet. And we will need to buy new cords.

South: Dorm meeting next Tuesday.

Anu: $16,000.

Social Funding Request for pizza for the last three parties.

Not going to have pizza for any of the parties for the rest of the semester.

$3500 seems like a lot of money, but pizza has really cut down on people. Tends to get people from getting angry when we run out of drinks. Also have at least 20 people come and tell me that this is the best thing that’s ever happened. Very popular, only positive feedback, and really helped limit incidents of alcohol poisoning.

Would offset extra costs that we didn’t expect, like when we funded Trick or Drink. Also a lot of pressure from Scripps to fund their parties, or they won’t fund us, as well as CMC. Scripps funds us a lot – so far this semester, $1550.

They don’t throw very many parties, and those parties don’t really have much Mudd attendance, so last year they didn’t ask us for money. But, this year is different.

There was a pirates vs. ninjas party last night (the same night as WWW), and they expected us to fund that party. And they were asking for about half the cost of the party from us, which was strange.

Offered them $300 instead of $800. Having another party December 8, think they’ll ask for money.

--: For every party, do you pre-determine how many pizzas you’re going to get?

Marielle: Always 100 pizzas. Sometimes a little different each time from Dean Chris ordering different toppings. Roughly $700. And Social funded all of WWW (none from DOS). And this pizza is already discounted.

--: Is DOS going to be covering pizzas for next year?

Marielle: My understanding is that he can’t go over $150-$250 to pay for pizza.

--: Can you request money from other campuses?

Marielle: We do ask for money from the other campuses. WWW we asked for $500, they gave us $200. It was weird that we didn’t just fund our own parties, but . Was the first true 5C party, so before now our requests from other campuses was limited. But CMC has been good, I think they will grant our requests for now.

We talked about allocating $2200 to WWW, and between for Casemas, LTG, and less for Nevada since that’s technically a Mudd party.

Patrick: We can’t technically allocate $3500 without a student vote.

Marielle: Social already went to student vote. Does this new allocation count under that?

Patrick: We could partially fund it now, and then you can request more later.

Leah: We can actually put the vote on the trial of the electronic voting system.

Patrick: We’re going to ask people for the strategic plan, or possibilities for the new dorm (suite or quad style). But that’s not for another month or so.

Marielle: I think that would be okay. Don’t get a lot of receipts for the parties until next semester. So don’t think it would hurt us to wait for that vote.

Anu: If we don’t put it to student vote, then you would just have to get reimbursed each time. Can’t put it on social account because of technicalities, since that counts as social budget.

Patrick: So we have $16000 left. This funding would be roughly 20%.

--: Suds, Trick or drink, and WWW, LOTS of people are eating them. Good for parties, makes thing safer.

--: We run out mixed drinks quickly, but also limits alcohol consumption.

--: Is there any way to fund this by advertising (like put an advertisement on the back of t-shirts)/sponsorship.

--: Also, dining hall might be an option. Ask Bill.

--: But also a matter that this is happening on the weekend, late. Don’t know if this will be

But, will ask.

Anu: last year was a total of $3700. This year we allocated $3600 but they also bought speakers.

Marielle: We’ve been wanting new speakers for 3 years. And they last a long time, we won’t need to get a new one for 5 years or so.

--: Another issue is that we give social a lot of money. But also recall that not all Mudders go to parties. Feel like we need to put it to student vote before we commit it to $3500.

Marielle: It’s also hard to downsizing parties, because of security expenses. And generally cuts the funding from other people. So it’s really difficult to cut down costs for parties without just cutting off a party entirely. Can’t really skim off $100 or $200 from a party.

--: If it’s 5C, do you think they’d be funding more to Mudd?

Marielle: I could emphasize that we are short on funding and we would have to cancel parties. Don’t know how Scripps will react, but it’s a strange situation this year.

--: What’s the limit?

-- 1500 might be a little too much

-- No, I think this is just a worthwhile thing.

-- We could also give $1000 now. But, need to pay people, and fund the rest of the parties for the rest of the semester. It would be better to have 1500.

Kenny: Run out of jackets and flashlights. Also problem because 3 people didn’t have a jacket. Head security guard didn’t even have a jacket. Also bought new flashlights.

So we’re asking for $483 to cover the cost the of the jackets and flashlights.

Kenny: Everyone gets their own jacket. When you’re hired, for the first 3 paychecks, part of it goes toward the jacket. But, when people go through their senior year, given option to sell back their jacket. And part of the student flashlights goes from paychecks a way. But, run out of jacket entirely.

This is the price for new jackets.

--: Is this the price that student security will pay for jackets?

Kenny: This is the overall cost (not including pay check amount). We have a little money to play with (such as for walkie talkies), but not enough to cover this.

--: What if you had a set jacket system? Like all the jackets are in the LAC and whoever needs it can get it.

Kenny: I think that would make it too complicated.

We take $10 from each jacket.

-- So paychecks will cover about 1/3 of the jacket.

Pay $45 for the night.

-- Couldn’t you just make them work the first night for free?

Also don’t think 10 jackets will work because sometimes security is for more than one event, so might not have enough jackets.

--How many people are doing student security now?

17 people on mailing list, but active members: Had a hard time getting 7 for WWW, but actively probably about 13 people who do it once a month or so.

-- Who funds you?

Get money from the dorms or the dorms social budget.

Marielle: Social covers all security costs for small parties.

Funding request for public course evaluations

Gena Orowsky

So a lot of other schools do course evaluation book.

George: For example, Harvard gives out books free. The profs support this. Online system might be better.

Gena: It’s like course evaluations, what profs are good, how to know what classes are like. Talked to Dean Cave and Dean Noda – as long as it’s not Harvey Mudd backed, it’s okay. ASHMC is a student body organization, so should be okay.

-- Does sound like a good idea. But I just wonder what kind of comments would go into that. Would it be unmoderated?

It’d have to be something monitored or edited, unless number. (e.g. Was this book useful? 1-10) Someone would have to edit it. Ideally I see this as something that a committee would work on.

-- Note that someone Think to have someone self-moderate it, so all the comments would go up, and then could be flagged.

-- All online.

It would be great if we could talk to the other colleges and get them involved at all.

-- Don’t know how useful it would be for technical/in-major courses, since those are required. Think it might be useful for hums, and really off-campus courses.

-- No, I think if it was a big enough database, that it would be this course for this prof, vs another option, I would definitely look at that.

-- Also remember that profs switch every semester or year.

-- Also would help to see if you’re stacking your schedule.

-- On-campus, since we’re such a small school, it seems extra. But, definitely for off-campus.

Gena: Specifically I wanted to know if ASHMC would be willing to this.

Gena: Also another thing we could do something like a Teaching Award. It was rejected by the school in the past.

-- I don’t think it’s a good idea.

--: It seems like profs aren’t really thanked.

-- But, a lot of the positive feedback would be in the course evaluations. Has a possibility to cause tensions.

-- Sometimes, people don’t take course evaluations seriously.

-- Well, they wouldn’t take the award seriously.

-- For evaluations, I think people who really do like a prof will take the course evaluations seriously.

Dean Noda: I think this is something that the 5C Senate could actually do. At least, have the discussion to see if there’s multi-campus commitment.

Patrick: So we’ll talk to Lindsay about that. We could probably get you guys to come in and talk about that.
