Each charter submitted to ASHMC should contain most of the sections below (the section about no member being discriminated against is mandatory), but the structure is not binding.
ASHMC Sample Charter
I. Purpose
The purpose section of a charter should explain why the club exists and what it hopes to accomplish. This section should identify some of the goals of the club.
II. Method
The method section should explain what the club will do and how. Information like how often the club meets should also be included. If it is something like an outdoor club that wants to promote activities, then this section should explain how these activities will be organized. It does not need to be detailed, but it should answer the question: "How does the club function?"
III. Structure
1. Officers
The officer section should describe the officers of the club. The officers for each particular club will vary greatly based on what the club does. The method in which officers will be selected should also be included here.
President: The President shall set meeting times and locations.
Treasurer: The Treasurer shall prepare budget requests, manage all fund, keep accurate records of all transactions, be prepared to submit audits to ASHMC Council, and to handle all other matters pertaining to the club's finances.
Gearmeister: The Gearmeister shall be responsible for maintain the club's equipment and making the equipment available to all members of ASHMC.
Other Officer: The other officer shall be responsible for performing some function the club needs.
2. Membership
No member or officer of this ASHMC Chartered organization shall be selected, dismissed or discriminated against on the basis of age, race, religion, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, national origin or political affiliation.
IV. Miscellaneous
Not everything a club does will fit neatly into the above heading. Other sections can be added that help explain the club.
