SFC – The Student Faculty Committee is composed of the presidents and vice presidents of each class, and headed by committee chair Leah Anderson (landerson@hmc.edu). SFC has funding allocated for events that bring students and professors together. SFC also organizes “short-courses” that allow professors to teach something interesting but nonacademic to a group of students in one afternoon or evening. If you have any ideas for events like those – or any important thing to say about an issue concerning both students and faculty – these are your people.
DOS – DOS stands for the Dean of Students’ Office, and they are HUGE. The DOS office is responsible for orientation, and for supplying and training our wonderful proctors, but you will probably encounter DOS most through the DOS Muchachos. Each year, an explosively enthusiastic and brilliantly imaginative squad of five or six students works with Dean Chris (or MC DC, as some DOS Muchachos know him) to put on exciting and entertaining study breaks during the year. Some of their most popular events are Bed Races, Pirate Ice Cream, Santa Yong, Noisy Minutes, Movie Nights, RC Destruction Derby, Fire Juggling, and S’MORES!!! To announce their events, DOS Muchachos use muscle, posters, and emails – but if you want in on the planning or want to discuss possible events, you need to get on activities-l. Send an email to listkeeper@hmc.edu with only one line: “subscribe activities-l”. For more personal DOS interaction, talk to Dean Chris or Muchacho Permanente Ace Ellet, at csundberg@hmc.edu or aellet@hmc.edu.
IHTP – Do you have school spirit like - WHOA! Do you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat thinking of plans for awesome events like the Frosh/Soph games or the Five Class Competition? Do you like throwing concerts outside Hoch-Shanahan or in Platt? Email Tracy Backes at tbackes@hmc.edu to get involved. IHTP is one of the most active events-planning groups on campus, and they want big, happy things for hmc.
MMAD – Mudders Making a Difference makes a difference. DOS hires several MMAD volunteering coordinators each year to organize events. If you have ideas for social work that you want HMC to be involved in, email Tom Donze at tdonze@hmc.edu. A few years ago, the idea to take a trip to help rebuild New Orleans was discussed in a Hum class. They brought it to MADD, and the trip has happened two years in a row now. Things like that are possible for your ideas, too, especially now that the school has embraced “Global engagement and informed contributions to society” as one of six Strategic Vision Initiatives.
CAP – Ginna Kim and Oksana Seergeva, this year’s CAP chairs, have money. Lots of money. CAP plans and funds activities on HMC’s campus and around Claremont. Any student can fill out a CAP event form and request funding. For events with enough Mudders (8) that are open to the entire HMC community (you send an email to students-l inviting everyone), CAP will usually subsidize tickets, pay for gas, or help purchase items you might need for whatever event you are planning. You like to do things. They are here to help you do those, and to give you money. You like getting money. Contact Ginna and Oksana at gkim@hmc.edu or osergeeva@hmc.edu. TALK TO THEM BEFORE SENDING ANYTHING TO students-l.
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO GET STUFF DONE
The Strauss Internship – Each summer, about five students are awarded Strauss Internships to do social work during the summer. You work with an organization of your choosing for ten weeks, at least forty hours a week, and the Strauss Internship awards you $3,000 to replace what you might have made getting a job over the summer. You can use this money for anything – to help you in your work that summer or for living expenses or paying off loans. This is an incredible opportunity, and the program has room to grow. Talk to Dean Chris (csundberg@hmc.edu) or any of several students who went last summer: Ben Margolis at bmargolis@hmc.edu, Mariam Youssef at mariam_youssef@hmc.edu, or Patrick Foley at pfoley@hmc.edu.
Strategic Vision Initiatives – Last year, through a process involving all of the faculty, many students, and several very long weekends, HMC developed its Strategic Plan for the next decade. Any new student should familiarize themselves with the plan and its goals, which they can find at http://www.hmc.edu/2020. President Maria Klawe has allocated $100,000 to be used for Strategic Vision Initiatives. If you have a good idea and the will to make it real, go to the 2020 site and submit a proposal. The six themes of the strategic plan are:
* Innovation, leadership and impact, especially in engineering,
science, and mathematics
* Experiential and interdisciplinary learning
* Unsurpassed excellence and diversity at all levels
* Nurturing and developing the whole person
* Global engagement and informed contributions to society
* Infrastructure and resources to support our commitment to
excellence and building community
Any student with a passion to work on these goals at HMC should consider Strategic Vision Initiatives. Proposals for the Fall semester have already been reviewed, but there will be a new round of funding in the Spring.
