Grad School or Work? Do Both!

Eric Burkhart has some interesting career advice for Mudders.

“For those of you who are unsure if you want to attend graduate school or get a job, I have an interesting alternative—do both! Many universities allow you to work toward degrees on a part-time basis from any geographical location.”

Eric is currently pursuing an M.S. in electrical engineering at Stanford while working as an electrical and software engineer at Link4 Corporation.

“At Link4, we design intelligent control solutions that are both powerful and intuitive,” he said. “Greenhouses are our primary market, although we are currently expanding into other areas.”

Link4 is a small company with several HMC graduates, including the CEO. “I'm very glad that I joined a company that understands what it means to be a Mudder,” said Eric. “Unlike at many large companies, where it may take a year or more to get noticed, everything you do in a small company is visible.

He feels that this type of environment is ideal for Mudders who are willing to take on extra responsibilities and want to quickly advance in a company. Eric started work at Link4 after graduation, and, since then, he’s worked on a medical device, a robotic irrigation system, and a new line of low-cost environmental controllers.
