According to Hart:
I came to Mudd intending to study physics, but after only a few months, I set my sights instead on chemistry. The chemistry department not only offered interesting courses, outstanding professors and ample opportunities for research experience, but it was also a very friendly place to spend four years. The summer after my first year at Mudd, I had the opportunity to research the electronic states of liquid crystals with Prof. Van Hecke and Prof. Cave. This is when I first noticed the tightly-knit community that exists in the department. I quickly made friends with chemistry majors of all classes and this support system was an integral piece of my Harvey Mudd experience.

The early research experience also opened several doors for me during my time at HMC. I spent the two summers working at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Chemistry and Material Science Division and the Center for Micro and Nanotechnology. The broad education that I received at Mudd has allowed me to work in areas ranging from high pressure geochemistry to electronics engineering and my favorite field, fuel cells.

During the school year, I tried to keep busy with all that Mudd has to offer. During my last two years, I was on the student council and worked as a writing tutor in the Writing Center. I was also a Freshman Orientation sponsor for three years and even got to go on a week-long hike with incoming students one year! When not working, you could usually find me skateboarding around campus, playing ultimate frisbee or shooting hoops.

I look forward to beginning my graduate studies in material science, and eventually I would like to work in science policy or science advising. Much of my interest in science policy is based on Harvey Mudd's mission to produce scientists who are well versed in the social implications of their work. This mission has stuck with me since I first read about the college. It is one of the many reasons that Mudd is so unique among technical schools and it is one of my favorite aspects of the college.
