HMC
Joseph Vaughan Named CIO

Jan 30, 2008 - Claremont, Calif. - Joseph Vaughan has been named chief information officer and director of computing and information services at Harvey Mudd College, President Maria Klawe announced recently.

Vaughan currently serves as director/humanities CIO in the UCLA Center for Digital Humanities and will begin his duties at HMC beginning Feb. 25. He earned his C.Phil. and M.A. degrees in philosophy at UCLA and his B.A. in philosophy and psychology at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

Vaughan will manage the Department of Computing and Information Services and its 18-person staff, which provides support organized into three groups: User Support, Data Services, and Systems and Networks. Because HMC is the lead campus in the Claremont Intercampus Networking Effort (CINE) of The Claremont Colleges, Vaughan will also provide leadership, direction and supervision in that area.

The User Support Group incorporates the CIS Help Desk, audiovisual and multi-media services, web support, desktop support, and printer and copier services and support. The Data Services group is responsible for database systems and programming for administrative applications. The Systems and Networks Group is responsible for maintaining and managing the network and a number of Linux and Windows servers for academic, administrative and institutional use.

The Systems and Networks group also provides most of the support for CINE and the Sakai Collaborative Learning Environment. CINE advances, maintains and manages the network that links The Claremont Colleges together and to the Internet and Internet2.

In announcing Vaughan’s appointment, President Klawe said, “With over 13 years of increasing responsibility in academic administration at a high-ranking research university, Joseph will be an excellent addition to our Computing and Information Services team as we move forward in improving our information technology infrastructure.”

In his letter of interest for the position, Vaughan stated, “Success…relies on a talented and dedicated team which understands that an academic IT unit must live by collaboration, impeccable service, and a firm grasp of academic priorities. My role in bringing projects to fruition has been to articulate service goals and priorities, provide vision, and imagine desirable outcomes.”

After his appointment, Vaughan stated, “I look forward to engaging the Harvey Mudd community and developing a strategic plan for IT services that will allow us to enhance teaching, learning and administrative services.”
