Apr 03, 2012 - Claremont, Calif. - The student-organized “Skate to Give” charity race held March 31 at Harvey Mudd College raised $350 to benefit at-risk youth. Participants were also treated to appearances by Ryan Farrelly, inventor and founder of Freeline Skates, and Mischo Erban, 2011 Downhill Longboarding Champion and World Record holder for fastest speed on a skateboard—80.83 mph. “Both are incredibly friendly and generous, and they really try to spread the word about freelining and skateboarding,” said Kim.
The money will be donated to Board Rescue, a nonprofit group that provides skateboards and safety equipment to at-risk and underprivileged youth nationwide.
As the first race hosted by the recently formed Harvey Mudd Skate Society (HMSS), the event achieved its main goal, said Kevin Kim ’13, HMSS vice president.
“The purpose was to raise funds for Board Rescue in a fun and exciting way, and everyone who attended the race enjoyed themselves,” he said.
Held on a relatively flat course throughout the Claremont Colleges, the race included all skill levels and modes of transport—skateboards, longboards and freeline skates. Racers paid a $5 fee on race day and had an opportunity to buy raffle tickets to win prizes donated by sponsors such as RipTide Sports, Mile High Skates, Xtreme Board Shop Glendora and more.
