Mar 29, 2012 - Claremont, Calif. - As many as 100 skaters are expected to compete in a charity race event 1-3 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at Harvey Mudd College. “Skate to Give” is the first race to be hosted by the recently formed Harvey Mudd Skate Society (HMSS). All proceeds will benefit Board Rescue, a nonprofit group that provides skateboards and safety equipment to underprivileged and at-risk youth.
“[Skateboarding] is a fun, safe activity to keep them off the streets—figuratively speaking, of course,” said Kevin Kim, HMSS vice president. “The event is planned as a fun way to bring skaters from the 5C's and local areas together while raising money for a relevant cause.”
Racers will pay a $5 entry fee on race day and have an opportunity to buy raffle tickets to win prizes donated by sponsors such as RipTide Sports, Mile High Skates, Xtreme Board Shop Glendora and more.
Held on a relatively flat course throughout the Claremont Colleges—a route that will be disclosed at race time—the event will include skaters of all skill levels and modes of transport. Participants will ride on skateboards, longboards and freeline skates.
Prizes will include first- through third-place race awards and special, “mini-event” awards for activities such as skateboard limbo, high jump, best trick and uphill sprint.
