May 26, 2009 - Claremont, Calif. - Google Anita Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a $10,000 award for the 2009-10 academic year. The scholarships are awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership. Scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to attend the Annual Google Scholars' Retreat in Mountain View, Calif., June 25-27, 2009. The scholarship honors Anita Borg, who devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology. Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field. In order to qualify for the scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria: Harvey Mudd College students Jaakko Karras ‘10 and Bryan Teague ‘10 have been awarded scholarships for 2009-10 by the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi, it was announced in April. The prestigious Tau Beta Pi scholarships are awarded to junior members of the society on a competitive basis of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession. The 234 Tau Beta Pi Scholars for 2009-10 will each receive a $2,000 cash award for his or her senior year of study. "This is a prestigious award and it speaks to the effort of the local HMC Tau Beta Pi leadership in the past few years to let students know of the opportunity to apply for these scholarships," said Sarah Harris, assistant professor of engineering. Based in Knoxville, Tenn., Tau Beta Pi is the world's largest engineering society. Membership represents the highest honor to be obtained by an engineering student and is awarded on the basis of high scholarship and exemplary character. A full list of scholarships, honors and awards earned by seniors this year can be found in the commencement program.
