Claremont Colleges Presidents to Visit Asia

Mar 25, 2008 - Claremont, Calif. - The presidents of The Claremont Colleges will travel to Asia March 27-April 5, using the opportunity to provide information about the colleges and their status as a premiere destination for undergraduate and graduate education in the United States.

The delegation will visit some of the leading universities in Asia, conduct academic outreach and emphasize the high standards of The Claremont Colleges in the liberal arts, engineering, mathematics, science, business and the arts.

The trip will begin with a reception hosted by Singapore president S.R. Nathan, and include additional stops in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Bejing, during which the delegation will meet with high-level government and academic officials. They will also meet with friends of the colleges that comprise The Claremont Colleges consortium, including donors, local alumni and parents of currents students at the colleges.

The trip is a historic one for the consortium as it marks the first time all of its presidents have traveled together to Asia. The delegation will include:

  • Maria Klawe, president, Harvey Mudd College
  • Ruye Wang, professor of engineering, Harvey Mudd College
  • Robert Klitgaard, president, Claremont Graduate University
  • Professor Michael Lamkin, president's special representative and conductor, Claremont Concert Orchestra, Scripps College
  • Gregory Dewey, senior vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, Keck Graduate Institute
  • Robert Walton, CEO, Claremont University Consortium
  • Reg Gipson, chairman, board of overseers, Claremont University Consortium
