Mar 29, 2007 - Claremont, Calif. - Because the obvious date for Pi Day (March 14, or 3.14) occurred during spring break, the tradition of raffling off the opportunity to toss a cream pie at a student's favorite (or not-so-favorite, as the case may be) faculty member was postponed. The top vote-getter this year was Visiting Professor of Engineering Bob Schaffer. Also chosen was perennial pi(e)-recipient David Money Harris, associate professor of engineering. Professor of Mathematics Nick Pippenger was given the honor simply because it was his birthday. Assistant Professor of Engineering Sarah Harris captured these photos of the event: Associate Professor of Engineering David Money Harris takes one for the team as Richard Garfinkel '07 celebrates a direct hit. Professor Harris, à la mode. Visiting Professor of Engineering Bob Schaffer appears defiant as Hufsa Ahmad '10 prepares for her toss. President Maria Klawe prepares to deliver a birthday present to her husband, Professor of Mathematics Nick Pippenger. Pi Day "honorees" gather for a group photo. The first couple enjoys a moment of Pi Day closeness. Note Professor Pippenger's tie, almost obscured by his "no pie on my pi tie" protective covering.
