Olson's "Science and Religion" now in Chinese

Sep 22, 2011 - Claremont, Calif. -

A Chinese translation of the book "Science and Religion, 1450-1900: From Copernicus to Darwin" written by Richard G. Olson '62 has been published by Shandong Peoples Press. Olson is the Willard W. Keith Fellow in Humanities and will serve as the Hixon-Riggs Professor of Science, Technology and Society this spring.

Published by Greenwood Publishing Group in 2004 and The Johns Hopkins University Press in 2006, the book examines the contributions of scientists like Galileo, Newton and Darwin and their influence on religion, and, more specifically, Christianity. The first volume in a 10-book series “Greenwood Guides to Science and Religion,” for which Olson was series editor, the book describes the way science interacts with religion and its ideas, attitudes, practices and institutions.

Olson has been a member of the faculty at HMC since 1976. His work has focused on the interrelationships between the natural sciences and other cultural domains, including moral philosophy, the social sciences, political ideology and religion. His recent publications include "Science and Scientism in Nineteenth-Century Europe" (University of Illinois Press, 2008), and "Technology and Science in Ancient Civilizations"(ABC-CLIO, 2010). He received HMC's Henry T. Mudd Prize in 2005.
