Aug 29, 2007 - Claremont, Calif. - “Harvey Mudd College has taken a number of important steps in recent years to increase the diversity of our student body,” says Associate Professor of Physics Peter Saeta, principal investigator for the grant at HMC. “Receiving this support from the NSF is a wonderful endorsement of our efforts and an exciting opportunity for us to attract and support a talented group of students with financial need. I’m delighted.” The S-STEM program provides institutions with funds for student scholarships to encourage and enable academically talented students with financial need to enter the workforce following completion of a baccalaureate or graduate degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The grant will provide scholarships to 36 students, enabling them to benefit from a Harvey Mudd College education and to graduate with significantly reduced debt. In addition, the grant will help fund mentoring and academic support programs that help all students succeed at HMC. Students applying for admission to HMC this fall will be eligible to apply for one of the 12 S-STEM scholarships, provided that they are U.S. citizens or nationals and have demonstrated financial need. The support from the NSF will help HMC attract talented students by offering more attractive and competitive financial aid packages.
