Much of life can be represented mathematically. Even your voting options can be imagined as a circle and the selection you make as a specific position along its arc.

Solving mathematical problems, however, moves beyond graphs and formulas, engaging the creative process of the human mind. Math majors Rosalie Carlson '13 and Kevin O'Neill '13 reveal the actions that led to their innovative answer to a summer research math quandary.

More than 170 Harvey Mudd College students are pursuing summer research projects alongside 45 faculty members in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics.

The projects are part of Harvey Mudd College's Summer Research Program, which engages students in 10 weeks of full-time research.
