Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe Joins Broadcom Board of Directors

May 05, 2011 - Claremont, Calif. -

On May 5, 2011 Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe was elected to the board of directors of Broadcom Corporation, the Irvine, Calif.-based technology company.

“Dr. Klawe is an important addition to our Board given the critical importance to our business of scientific and engineering innovation,” said Scott McGregor, Broadcom’s president and chief executive officer. “Dr. Klawe’s understanding of scientific research and the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) talent pipeline, as well as her experience in the management and operations of large organizations will be invaluable to our Board.”

Klawe will be the first college administrator and one of the first educators to serve on the Broadcom Board, along with Broadcom’s co-founder, professor at UCLA’s School of Engineering Henry Samueli, who was also elected to the Board. Klawe now serves on the boards of two public corporations that are leaders in different areas of technology, Broadcom and Microsoft Corporation, which she joined in March 2009.

“As president of a college whose mission is to prepare students to work on the cutting edge of science, technology, engineering and math, and to understand the impact of their work on society, I’m excited to join the Board of Broadcom,” Klawe said. “Broadcom is a company dedicated to innovation in technology, including technology that many of us use to communicate daily, and was founded with the kind of entrepreneurial spirit we encourage at Harvey Mudd College.”

Klawe became president of Harvey Mudd College in 2006. Prior to joining Harvey Mudd, she served as dean of engineering and professor of computer science at Princeton University from 2003 to 2006. From 1988 to 2002, she held several positions at the University of British Columbia including dean of science, vice president of student and academic services and head of the Department of Computer Science. She has also worked at IBM Research in California, the University of Toronto and Oakland University in Michigan. Klawe received her bachelor’s degree and doctorate in mathematics from the University of Alberta, Canada.

Klawe is a past president of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), a trustee of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley, and a member of the board of Math for America. She is a fellow of the ACM and the Canadian Information Processing Society, and the recipient of numerous awards including the Computing Research Association's Nico Habermann Award. Klawe holds several honorary doctorate degrees in the areas of science and mathematics.
