HMC Granted $200,000 in Luce Scholarships

Oct 20, 2011 - Claremont, Calif. -

The Henry Luce Foundation has granted Harvey Mudd College $200,000 to provide scholarships to female students majoring in computer science, engineering or physics.

The Clare Boothe Luce scholarships, which will be awarded in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 academic years, align with the College’s priority of increasing the representation of women at HMC.

“Harvey Mudd College has made great progress in bringing extraordinary women to our faculty and student body in growing numbers,” said HMC President Maria Klawe. “We are deeply grateful for this vote of confidence in our work by the Luce Foundation, which increases the resources at hand for outstanding women students.”

The Clare Boothe Luce (CBL) Program strives to increase the participation of women in science and engineering at every level of higher education, and to serve as a catalyst for colleges and universities to be proactive in their own efforts toward this goal. The CBL Program is the single largest private source of funding for women in science and engineering. Since its inception in 1989, grants totaling more than $120 million have been made to 152 different colleges and universities.

The scholarships are named in honor of Clare Boothe Luce (1903-1987), a remarkable woman whose career spanned seven decades and included many professional interests: journalism, politics, theater, diplomacy and intelligence. In her will, Boothe chose to establish a legacy that would benefit current and future generations of women with talent and ambition in science and engineering—areas where they continue to be underrepresented.
