
Apr 04, 2012 - Claremont, Calif. - Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe will participate in the White House Forum on Women & the Economy on Friday, April 6 in Washington D.C. Invited by Chair Valerie Jarrett and Executive Director Tina Tchen of the White House Council on Women & Girls, which organized the forum, Klawe is one of a select group of female academics and business leaders who will participate. She will attend remarks by President Barack Obama and join senior White House officials for a panel discussion. Klawe will also participate in a break-out group on the role of women in the economy with White House Domestic Policy Council Director Cecilia Munoz and President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Shirley Ann Jackson. Klawe appeared in an April 2, 2012 New York Times article that discussed the progress HMC and its Computer Science Department have made in attracting and retaining female computer science students. The article, “Giving Women the Access Code,” describes how HMC increased the number of women majoring in computer science to triple the national average through innovative introductory computer science courses, expanded CS research opportunities, and increased attendance at the female-focused Grace Hopper Conference.
