Mar 23, 2011 - Claremont, Calif. -

On Friday, March 25, HMC will host the forum “The Japanese Disaster: A Primer for the Public on Geophysics and Radioactivity” with geophysicist Greg Lyzenga and physicist Peter Saeta, both also HMC physics professors, in Galileo-McAlister Hall from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A question and answer period will follow the talk. This forum is free and open to the public.

Lyzenga will describe the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami and explain why earthquakes of magnitude nine cannot happen in Southern California. Saeta will discuss the basics of nuclear power and the challenges facing the Japanese as they seek to regain control of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

We will live stream the forum at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time at:  http://www.hmc.edu/japan-tsunami/
