Nov 12, 2010 - Claremont, CA - Harvey Mudd College Clinical Professor of Engineering Carl Baumgaertner, who earned a Silver Star for heroic service during WWII, described his war time experience and its meaning for his family on NPR's "The Story" on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010. Baumgaertner's grandson also spoke on the program about visiting the site, 50 years later, where his grandfather crossed the Saar River in Germany in a risky surprise attack on German forces. Three generations of Baumgaertners, who value their German descent, discussed the importance to the family of understanding and documenting Carl Baumgaertner's experiences.
