Faculty Publish New Books

Dec 16, 2008 - Claremont, Calif. - Harvey Mudd College faculty published several books in recent months, including the third edition of Engineering Design, A Project-Based Introduction (John Wiley, New York), by Professors of Engineering Clive Dym and Patrick Little, with their colleagues Elizabeth Orwin and Erik Spjut.

Dym also published a new text, Introduction to Engineering Mechanics, A Continuum Approach (CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida), with co-author Jenn Stroud Rossmann; and a Korean translation of the second edition of Engineering Design (Info-Tech, Seoul, South Korea), also co-authored with Little. A prolific author, Dym has authored 11 books, edited nine books and authored five book chapters in the areas of engineering, engineering design and mathematical modeling.

Dym is also the host of the biennial Mudd Design Workshop at Harvey Mudd College. The seventh edition of the workshop series will center around the theme “Sustaining Sustainable Design” and will be held May 28-30, 2009. It will attract engineering designers, educators and researchers from around the world.

Zuoyue Wang, Hixon-Riggs Visiting Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, published In Sputnik’s Shadow: The President’s Science Advisory Committee and Cold War America, earlier this year. It was reviewed in the November 2008 issue of Science magazine, which said:

“Zuoyue Wang’s [book] reminds us in rich detail of various ways in which U.S. presidents, especially in the mid- and late 20th century, have obtained advice on science. Wang’s book provides the scientific community and policy-makers with a most timely reminder of the positive roles scientists can play in an open society. We can only hope that Barack Obama will turn a page and not let ideology, personal beliefs, or party politics interfere with his seeking of sound science advisement. In Sputnik’s Shadow offers a history that both policy-makers and scientists should heed well.”
