Class of '11 Features Record Number of Women

May 31, 2007 - Claremont, Calif. - Next fall’s incoming class of 2011 will feature a record number of female students, it was announced in early May by Peter Osgood, interim vice president of admission and financial aid.

Eighty-five of the 201 incoming students (42.3 percent) are female, a record number. The class also reflects a more national distribution, with 63 percent of students coming from outside the state.

“I must give credit where it is due,” Osgood said of the robust numbers of students in the incoming class. “Our staff worked incredibly hard this year, but with great pride in their work. Faculty e-mailed, called, met with, interviewed, toured and ultimately convinced many students that this college will provide the resources and mentoring that first-class students deserve. Our students are remarkably generous hosts, tour guides, panelists, and e-mail and IM correspondents.”

Osgood also acknowledged the work of President Maria Klawe in reaching out to female students who were considering Mudd. She e-mailed every female applicant, sent a hand-written note to each admitted woman and replied to many direct queries about HMC.

In his announcement to the college, Osgood said, “It is with great pride and confidence in you, that I place these eager students in your care.”
