HMC
Barela Honored With 2012 Binder Prize

May 09, 2012 - Claremont, Calif. -

Students describe her as a caring, supportive mentor and role model. Co-workers laud her friendly manner and strong work ethic. Community members honor her commitment to Harvey Mudd College.

These are but a few of the reasons why Irene Barela, administrative coordinator for Annual Giving, was chosen to receive the 2012 Mary G. Binder Prize.

Awarded each year to a member of HMC’s support staff, the prize recognizes someone who has combined a record of exceptional service with a helpful and friendly attitude toward students, staff and faculty.

“We all appreciate Irene’s work ethic, warm and sincere personality and tireless commitment to HMC and our community,” said Dan Macaluso, vice president of Advancement. “It’s touching to see her recognized for something that comes so naturally to her.”

Barela’s award includes a $750 check, a commemorative certificate and the addition of her name on the Mary G. Binder Prize plaque in the foyer of Galileo Hall. She will receive the award—along with recognition for her 15 years of service at HMC—at the College’s year-end celebration on Monday, May 14.

“I’m truly honored to be a part of this special community of faculty, staff and students that I consider to be my second family,” Barela said. “I’m also honored to receive the Mary G. Binder Prize, because it not only shows that I am appreciated for my work and dedication, but also makes my job that much more fulfilling. I’m thankful to be at a place that recognizes staff in such a significant way.”

The Mary G. Binder Prize was established in 1997 with a gift from Professor Emeritus Sam Tanenbaum and his wife, Carol, in honor of Carol’s mother, Mary G. Binder, and in expression of their gratitude to HMC’s support staff.
