Aug 11, 2010 - Claremont, CA - Arthur Benjamin, Harvey Mudd College’s resident "mathemagician" and dedicated professor of mathematics, will be featured on the Science Channel on August 16, 2010 in the U.S. premiere of a the BBC program "What Makes A Genius?" The 50-minute documentary will feature Professor Benjamin along with an impressive line-up of researchers and artists including brain specialist Justin P. Halberda of Johns Hopkins University shown testing children for latent mathematical ability, neurobiologist Manuel Casanova of the University of Louisville who claims to have detected differences in brain structure that may account for unusual intelligence, and Elly Nedivi of MIT who may have found a gene tied to learning. During his segment, Benjamin amazes BBC host Du Sautoy and several passersby in a Boston train station with a demonstration of his phenomenal mathematical skills. Earlier this year, Benjamin was a special guest on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" where he dazzled host Stephen Colbert and nearly one million viewers with his mental math skills. Benjamin remarked of the experience that he loves to share the power and beauty of mathematics to a wide audience. Benjamin was recently featured in the "Education Life" section of the New York Times along with one of his challenging but entertaining math quizzes. The online video of his talk at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference has been viewed over 1 million times.
