Google's Alan Eustace to Speak at HMC

Apr 04, 2007 - Claremont, Calif. - Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering at Google, will deliver the Dr. Bruce J. Nelson ‘74 Distinguished Speaker Series lecture Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Galileo Hall at Harvey Mudd College. His talk is titled “Don’t Be Evil.”

At Google, Eustace leads a company that is exploring new ways to organize the world’s information to make it universally accessible and useful. He joined Google in the summer of 2002. Prior to Google, Eustace was the director of Digital/Compaq/HP’s Western Research Laboratory (WRL). During his 15 years at WRL, he worked on a variety of chip design and architecture projects, including the MicroTitan Floating Point unit, BIPS, the hottest and fastest microprocessor of its day (1990, 330 MHz, 115 watts).

Eustace also worked with Amitabh Srivastava on ATOM, a binary code instrumentation system that forms the basis for a wide variety of program analysis and computer architecture analysis tools. These tools heavily influenced the design of the EV5, EV6 and EV7 chip designs. In 1999, Eustace was promoted to director of WRL, which had active projects in pocket computing, chip multi-processors, power and energy management, Internet performance, and frequency and voltage scaling. Eustace is the author of nine publications and 10 patents. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Central Florida.

In addition to the Nelson lecture, Eustace will be on campus as the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Visiting Professor in Leadership and Management. He will teach part of an ongoing class in leadership and hold seminars and discussions for students, faculty and administrators.

Developing ethical leadership is a fundamental component of the education provided at Harvey Mudd College. The Walter and Leonore Annenberg Visiting Professorship in Leadership and Management advocates and develops this vision.

The Nelson lectures are free and open to the public and will be followed by a dessert reception. The spring 2007 Dr. Bruce J. Nelson ‘74 Distinguished Speaker Series builds on the campus appearances of the Annenberg Visiting Professors. The generosity of the family of Dr. Bruce J. Nelson ‘74 has made this lecture series possible.
