Apr 01, 2007 - Claremont, Calif. - The 2493 applicants represented a new benchmark, 18 percent higher than 2006 and part of a 31 percent increase over the past two years. Geographically, 38 percent of applicants hail from California, while 17.5 percent are from the East, 13 percent from the South, 11.5 percent from the Northwest, 9 percent from the Midwest, 9 percent from the Southwest/Mountain region and 3 percent are international. With the exception of California, all regions increased from last year. Male students make up 53.4 percent of the potential class and 46.6 percent are female. Fifty-three percent are white, 28.5 percent Asian, 8 percent Latino, 2.5 percent African-American (does not include non-citizens), 1 percent Native American and 7 percent other, or no response. Six percent will be first-generation college students (their parents did not attend college). Seventy-three percent attended public or a public charter school, 16 percent attended an independent non-religious school, 10 percent attended a religious-affiliated school and 1 percent were home schooled, or other. Thirty-two percent of applicants attend schools that do not report rank. Of the remainder, 95 percent were in the top 10 percent and 23 percent rank number one or two in their graduating class. Thirty-seven percent are National Merit semi-finalists. The middle 50 percent range on their SAT scores were: 690-760 in critical reading, 700-770 in writing, 740-800 in math and 750-800 in math level 2. Forty-six percent of admitted students scored a perfect 800 on the SAT math level 2 exam.
